Job summary

Elastic is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch - Search Relevance team. You will lead initiatives to advance the industry-leading search engine, contribute new features, fix bugs, and optimize code for speed and relevance.

You will collaborate with a globally distributed team, work on vector search capabilities, and own design decisions in a highly autonomous role. Proficiency in Java and experience with search tech are essential.

Qualifications

• Professional experience with search or vector databases, and you have used HNSW, IVF, or other relevant algorithms and libraries on search platforms at scale.
• You have solid skills in core Java and are conversant in the standard library of data structures and concurrency constructs, as well as other features like lambdas.
• You work with a high level of autonomy and are able to take on projects and guide them from beginning to end.
• You're comfortable developing collaboratively and asynchronous collaboration is valued.
• You've used multiple data storage technologies like Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra.
• You have a track record of using AI to accelerate development and optimize code while owning outcomes.
• You collaborate across functions and teams and can switch between projects as priorities shift.
• You work autonomously and drive decisions in a distributed team via transparent communication.

Responsibilities

• Lead initiatives within Elasticsearch to produce an industry-leading search engine offering, supplying speed and relevance in search.
• Contribute to Elasticsearch full time, building new search features and fixing bugs, possibly inventing new algorithms or data structures.
• Work with a globally distributed team focused on vector search capabilities of Elasticsearch.
• Be an expert on Elasticsearch search relevance and drive improvements based on data and instincts.
• Engage with community members worldwide on issues and pull requests, triaging when needed.
• Write idiomatic modern Java — Elasticsearch is 99.8% Java.
