Elastic, the Search AI Company, is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to advance vector search in Elasticsearch. You will design and implement features, improve vector similarity, and work with a distributed team on scalable search technology.

You will lead initiatives, contribute to core code, and collaborate asynchronously with engineers worldwide, leveraging Java expertise and AI-driven development.

Qualifications

• Experience with vector similarity and vector databases; used HNSW, IVF at scale.
• Strong Java skills and knowledge of concurrency, data structures, lambdas.
• Ability to lead projects end-to-end in distributed teams.
• Experience collaborating over the internet (asynchronous collaboration a plus).
• Familiar with Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB or Cassandra.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.
• Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development and debug complex systems.
• Ability to switch between projects and teams in a distributed setting.
• Autonomy; drive decisions in distributed environments.

Responsibilities

• Lead vector search initiatives in Elasticsearch to deliver fast, relevant results.
• Contribute to Elasticsearch features and bugs; design or implement new algorithms.
• Collaborate with a globally distributed team of engineers.
• Become the go-to expert on vector similarity in Elasticsearch.
• Engage with open source community via issues and PRs.
• Write idiomatic modern Java; Elasticsearch is 99.8% Java.
