Job summary

NACOS Marine is seeking an experienced Backend Developer (m/f/d) to join our R&D team. You will design and develop safety-critical backend software for embedded controllers and automation platform components powering vessels worldwide.

Contribute to protocol stacks, real-time performance, and secure communications while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable maritime automation solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering, CS, or related technical field.
• Minimum 5 years of embedded C/C++ experience.
• Experience with comms protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, Profinet, TCP/IP, Modbus, OPC-UA, MQTT).
• Strong understanding of microcontroller architectures, DMA, interrupts, low-level drivers, and embedded interfaces.
• Experience with embedded cybersecurity concepts (secure boot, encrypted comms, access control).
• Familiarity with Git and CI/CD practices.
• Fluent in English, written and spoken.

Responsibilities

• Develop embedded backend software in C/C++ for microcontrollers, focusing on performance and real-time operation.
• Design and maintain protocol stacks (UART, SPI, I2C, Profinet, TCP/IP, Modbus, MQTT).
• Develop transport, session, and application layer functionality with state machines and parsing.
• Optimize timing, latency, throughput, and resource use.
• Integrate firmware with hardware interfaces and drivers.
• Ensure compliance with maritime, industrial, and cybersecurity standards.
• Produce technical documentation across the software lifecycle.
• Collaborate with software, hardware, QA, and systems teams to deliver robust platforms.
• Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and testing.
