Job summary

Lace Lithography seeks a Senior Automation Engineer to lead the automation layer for laboratory and production systems in Bergen. You will bridge PLC control with higher-level software, focusing on reliability, fail-safe behavior, and scalable operation.

You will work with physicists, electrical engineers, and hardware developers to design robust automation solutions, including interfaces, interlocks, alarms, diagnostics, and data models, using Rust or Python.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Automation, Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
• 5+ years of professional experience delivering PLC-based automation systems through full lifecycle.
• Proficiency in at least one general-purpose language (Rust or Python).
• Strong hardware integration and industrial communication knowledge.
• Experience with PLC programming, interlocks, alarms, fault handling, and safe-state behavior.

Responsibilities

• Automation Architecture: Define and evolve PLC-based automation for instrumentation systems and interfaces.
• PLC and Control Logic Development: Design, test, and maintain PLC applications for sequencing and diagnostics.
• Hardware-Software Integration: Build interfaces between PLCs and higher-level software using industrial protocols.
• System Integration and Commissioning: Lead hands-on integration and commissioning in Bergen lab.
• Testing and Reliability: Establish automated testing and hardware-in-the-loop approaches.
• Roadmap: Evaluate platforms and help define a pragmatic long-term automation roadmap.
• Software Development: Write and review code in Rust or Python to enable robust data exchange.
