Job description

Enhanced Drilling, now a part of Expro is looking for a Lead Engineer- Control Systems (Global) to join our team.

The opportunity

As Lead Engineer – Control Systems, you will be the global technical authority for control systems within Enhanced Drilling’s Technology & Reliability organization. You will own and govern the standards, architectures and lifecycle practices that determine how our control systems are designed, verified, operated and maintained worldwide.

This senior role combines technical authority, strategic governance and practical engineering leadership. You will influence projects, operations and product development while improving the safety, reliability, operability, maintainability, diagnosability and cybersecurity of our control systems.

Key outcomes
  • Establish globally consistent control-system standards, architectures and design principles.
  • Improve the safety, reliability, availability, operability and lifecycle performance of control systems.
  • Provide credible technical authority and direction across projects, operations, suppliers and product development.
Main responsibilities
Technical authority and governance
  • Own the global control-system discipline standards and provide technical approval within established governance and delegation-of-authority processes.
  • Govern requirements for system architecture, hardware, software, interfaces, documentation and lifecycle management.
  • Review designs and modifications for compliance with company requirements, applicable regulations and relevant industry standards.
  • Provide technical direction during Management of Change, risk assessment and engineering-assurance activities.
System architecture and standardization
  • Develop and maintain reference architectures and design principles for programmable logic controllers, supervisory control and data acquisition systems, human-machine interfaces, instrumentation, networks and integrated control systems.
  • Standardize operator interaction, alarm management, diagnostics, event logging, fault handling and system-status presentation.
  • Define redundancy, failover, degraded-mode and recovery principles for critical control-system functions.
  • Drive consistent engineering practices across products, projects and regional operations.
Reliability, safety and cybersecurity
  • Govern lifecycle and reliability strategies for critical control-system assets, including obsolescence, backups, recovery, configuration and version control.
  • Be part of or lead technical reviews /RCA of recurring failures, trips, alarms, communication issues and system deviations, and ensure lessons learned are incorporated into standards and maintenance strategies.
  • Define requirements for interlocks, safe-state behavior, barrier functions and operational-risk reduction.
  • Establish operational-technology cybersecurity requirements for access, remote connectivity, patching, backups and secure system architecture.
Verification and lifecycle management
  • Establish qualification and verification strategies, including acceptance criteria and requirements for documented evidence.
  • Define requirements for periodic system health assessments, obsolescence management, technology refresh planning, and long-term asset integrity.
Leadership and continuous improvement
  • Lead the global control-systems discipline within Integrity & Reliability and mentor engineers and specialists across the organization.
  • Coordinate internal and outsourced engineering activities and act as a technical interface between disciplines, operations, suppliers and customers.
  • Contribute to design reviews, root-cause analyses, failure mode, effects and criticality analyses, technology assessments and qualification activities.
  • Shape technology roadmaps, improvement initiatives and long-term standardization priorities.
Essential qualifications and experience
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in systems engineering, electrical engineering, automation, cybernetics or a related discipline. Extensive relevant expertise may compensate for a lack of formal education.
  • Typically ten or more years of relevant experience in industrial automation, programmable logic controller and supervisory control systems, or integrated control systems.
  • Demonstrated experience developing or governing control-system architectures, standards and lifecycle practices.
  • Strong competence in system integration, industrial networks, diagnostics, alarm management, reliability and fault tolerance.
  • Strong technical documentation, governance and design-review capabilities.
  • Strong written and spoken English.
Preferred experience
  • Experience from offshore, marine, drilling, energy or another safety-critical industry.
  • Knowledge of functional safety, barrier management, operational-technology cybersecurity and operational-risk reduction.
  • Experience with system qualification, commissioning, lifecycle governance or technical assurance.
Personal attributes
  • Communicates complex technical matters clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Builds alignment and provides credible technical direction across disciplines, regions and organizational boundaries.
  • Balances strategic governance with practical engineering judgement.
  • Works independently, takes ownership and manages competing priorities effectively.
  • Shares knowledge, develops others and promotes continuous improvement and safe working practices.
