Job description

Background

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are core principles at UNDP: we value diversity as an expression of the multiplicity of nations and cultures where we operate, we foster inclusion as a way of ensuring all personnel are empowered to contribute to our mission, and we ensure equity and fairness in all our actions. Taking a ‘leave no one behind’ approach to our diversity efforts means increasing representation of underserved populations. People who identify as belonging to marginalized or excluded populations are strongly encouraged to apply. Learn more about working at UNDP including our values and inspiring stories.

UNDP does not tolerate sexual exploitation and abuse, any kind of harassment, including sexual harassment, and discrimination. All selected candidates will, therefore, undergo rigorous reference and background checks.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the backbone of the UN development system. The UNDP Strategic Plan (2026-2029) is grounded in the determination of UNDP to eradicate poverty, the greatest global challenge, indispensable to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. During these next four years, UNDP will continue to support countries’ progress towards high human development, while protecting the planet. Four strategic objectives – prosperity for all, effective governance, crisis resilience and healthy planet – define its strategic direction, powered by three accelerators: digital and artificial intelligence (AI) transformation; gender equality; and sustainable finance.

The Global Policy Centre for Governance (GPCG), as a core part of UNDP’s Governance, Rule of Law and Peacebuilding (GRP) Hub, supports more inclusive, transparent, accountable and effective governance systems. The Centre identifies persistent development challenges with governance at their core, and applies research, analysis, learning, and UNDP’s convening capabilities to develop, test, and advance practical policy alternatives and solutions.

The GPCG’s work is organized around four interconnected priorities:

  • Financial Integrity and systemic derisking approaches that strengthen enabling environments for sustainable development;
  • Data sharing and transparency, in support of more effective governance systems;
  • Data and analytics related to SDG 16 ‘peace, justice and strong institutions’ including UNDP’s custodianship role for select SDG 16 indicators;
  • Gender equality with a focus on the governance barriers related to underutilized gender data and pathways to stronger policy uptake.

Across these areas, the Centre develops and tests integrated policy alternatives and solutions that strengthen national systems, build trust in institutions, and improve the enabling conditions for sustainable development.

An internship position is available to support the Centre’s workstreams on SDG 16 Data & Analytics and Gender Data. A custodian of several SDG 16 indicators, the Centre coordinates a global data collection process and produces key analytical outputs such as the Global Progress Report on SDG 16 and regional snapshots. The Centre also develops and maintains digital platforms dashboards and dashboards to disseminate data and findings, including tools such as the UNDP Global Dashboard on Women in the Judiciary and the SDG 16 website.

Gender equality is a cross-cutting priority across the Centre’s programme. An emerging area of work focuses on the disconnect between the production of gender data and its systematic use in policy, planning, budgeting and public investment decisions. With a particular focus on time-use data, the Centre is examining the governance, institutional and political-economy barriers that limit policy uptake and developing practical approaches to strengthen the use of gender evidence in decision‑making. This work is being developed in collaboration with UNDP’s Gender Team and will draw on country experiences across regions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Support data collection, statistical analysis and visualization related to SDG 16, including the preparation, validation and presentation of data for global and country-level analytical products.
  • Contribute to the preparation of datasets, code scripts and reproducible analytical workflows using statistical software such as R, Python or Stata.
  • Support the design, development, and enhancement of digital platforms and interactive dashboards including data preparation, automation of data pipelines, quality assurance, visualization and user-oriented analytical outputs.
  • Support the management, documentation and quality assurance of data and metadata, ensuring consistency, reproducibility and adherence to statistical standards. Support the development of the annual SDG 16 Global Progress Report and other analytical reports and knowledge products on SDG 16 and governance.
  • Support efforts to increase country reporting on SDG 16 indicators drawing on administrative data, including through outreach, data compilation and follow-up with national counterparts, with particular attention to strengthening reporting on the representation of women in the judiciary.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical consultations, webinars, workshops and in-person meetings related to SDG 16 and governance data, and support dissemination, communications and advocacy activities around the Centre’s SDG 16 data products.
  • Contribute to research and analysis on governance data and measurement, including emerging methodological issues and approaches to strengthening the availability, quality and use of SDG 16 data.
  • Support desk research and evidence mapping on the use of gender data, particularly time-use data, in policy, planning, budgeting and public investment processes.
  • Assist in mapping country experiences and examples of how time-use and other gender data are translated into policy and fiscal decision-making, including relevant institutional and cross-ministerial arrangements.
  • Support analysis of governance and institutional barriers to the uptake and use of gender data, including coordination, incentives, capacities and links between national statistical systems and policy‑making institutions.
  • Contribute to country-level research, case studies, policy briefs and other knowledge products on gender data utilisation.
  • Support stakeholder and partnership mapping and the preparation of technical consultations and knowledge exchanges related to gender data utilisation, governance and inclusive public finance.
  • Additional tasks as required to support the work of the Centre.
