Job description

Arondite is a defence technology company building the foundational software and AI to power the autonomous age. Our aim is to transform how organisations collaborate with robots, sensors and autonomous systems, and how they use the data those systems generate. We are driven by our determination to help defend our collective democratic values and by our belief that a small group of exceptional engineers can make a disproportionate difference. We are ambitious, well funded and building for the long term.

You would join Arondite at a pivotal point in the company’s growth. We are building the company with exceptional engineers who are motivated by technically difficult, high-impact work and who consistently deliver outsized results. You will work alongside people who care deeply about craft, speed, judgment and mission value.

You will have ownership and autonomy from day one. There is no corporate ladder at Arondite. From your first day, you will directly influence how Arondite’s technology is deployed, how the product evolves, and how we support customers operating in complex real-world environments.

About the role:

We work closely alongside our customers to deploy our technology in demanding operational settings. As a Deployed Software Engineer in Oslo, you will help implement Arondite’s products with Norwegian customers and partners so that they solve real problems outside the lab, not just in demonstrations.

This role sits at the intersection of engineering, deployment and customer understanding. You will travel to customer offices, test sites, exercises and field environments, learn unfamiliar systems quickly, and write software that makes Arondite’s platform useful in the context that matters to the user. You will also collect feedback from operators, engineers and programme stakeholders, then work with the wider engineering team to ensure lessons from the field shape the core product.

For Norway, this role is especially important because the opportunity is fundamentally about interoperability. The UK-Norway Lunna House Agreement and wider NATO integration needs all point to the same challenge: connecting heterogeneous autonomous platforms, sensors and software into a coherent operational picture. Cobalt is well positioned as that integration layer, and this role helps make that proposition real in practice.

The initial operating model may combine regular Oslo presence with support from the wider UK team while the local footprint expands. Over time, this role is expected to become a highly trusted technical presence in market: someone who can support trials, shape deployments, build credibility with users and help inform Arondite’s broader Norway strategy.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Travel to customer and partner sites in Norway, the UK and occasionally elsewhere to understand operational use cases first hand
  • Deploy Arondite’s products into customer environments and adapt them to real-world technical constraints
  • Write secure, robust production-quality software in support of customer deployments and fielded use cases
  • Interface with autonomous systems, robotics platforms, sensors and legacy systems in live test or exercise settings
  • Work through integration challenges involving heterogeneous Norwegian, UK and NATO-aligned systems
  • Collaborate directly with users to refine implementations and maximise mission value
  • Feed product insight back into the core engineering team so the platform improves based on real deployment learning
  • Partner with colleagues across software, AI/ML, networking, product and strategy to solve hard customer problems quickly
  • Help establish a culture of engineering excellence, pragmatism and ownership within the deployed team
You should have:
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical or scientific subject, or equivalent practical experience
  • Strong programming skills in either server-side languages such as C++, Java, Rust or Python, or front-end development in TypeScript or JavaScript using frameworks such as Angular or React
  • A strong interest in working across a varied technical stack, including deployment, integration and field engineering problems
  • The ability to learn unfamiliar systems quickly and work effectively in ambiguous, real-world environments
  • Strong communication skills and confidence working directly with customer users, engineers and stakeholders
  • Willingness to travel frequently and spend meaningful time on-site with customers and partners
  • Good engineering judgment, including a clear understanding of reliability, maintainability and secure development practices
  • You will be a key part of our early team in Norway, with significant opportunity to take on leadership responsibilities should you wish. Depending on your experience you may find yourself taking on a leadership role straight away.
Nice to have

This is not an additional list of requirements. It reflects areas likely to be useful in Arondite’s current and expected deployment environments.

  • Experience working on embedded or resource-constrained devices
  • Experience integrating with legacy systems
  • Experience with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL
  • Experience with machine learning applications in deployed settings
  • Comfort working with hardware and debugging issues outside a standard office environment
  • Familiarity with distributed systems, networking or communications in difficult operating conditions
  • Experience supporting demonstrations, trials or operational technology rollouts
  • A keenness to take on leadership responsibilities as the scale of our Norwegian operation grows
Right to work

Applicants should have the legal right to work in Norway at the time of application, or a clear and realistic route to obtaining it. Final employment arrangements will depend on the operating model used for Norway.

Security clearance

We believe in working closely with defence customers. As a result, this role is likely to require the ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate Norwegian security clearance. The precise clearance level, sponsorship route, eligibility criteria, expected timelines and any interim working arrangements should be confirmed before external publication, but candidates should be comfortable with the expectation of security screening and working in a defence environment.

Office vs hybrid working

We are focused on building a positive, collaborative, engineering-driven culture. We therefore believe in making the office a friendly, comfortable and productive place to be, and we try to work in person where possible. Of course, there are times when it makes sense for you to work from home, and that is fine. You may also need to travel to visit customers, partners and trial sites depending on your role. But in general you should only apply to join Arondite if you are excited to work in person by default and to spend meaningful time on site with users.

For Norway specifically, the initial operating model may involve close support from London alongside regular [Oslo] presence. Over time, this role should help inform how much permanent local deployment capacity Arondite needs in market.

You will be one of our early team in Norway and we are still finalising our benefits package. However, as a guide, we currently intend to progressively offer the benefits below:

  • Generous equity scheme in Arondite so you have a stake in the company’s growth
  • 7% employer pension contribution
  • Free meals
  • Private health and dental insurance
  • Any resources, equipment and training that you need to do your job in a world-class way
