Salary: £28,000 - £33,000 Full Time (Dependent on Experience)
The Arab British Centre is hiring a Communications & Events Officer as part of our work to improve communications, strengthen audience engagement and support earned income through courses and new projects. We are entering an important period of organisational development as we seek to strengthen our operations, build sustainable income streams, prepare for our 50th anniversary and improve our digital communications infrastructure.
This role would suit someone with at least three years’ relevant experience as a Communications Assistant or Officer, OR someone who can demonstrate strong communications, digital content creation, marketing or events experience through projects, placements, freelance work or study. We are looking for someone with excellent written and spoken English, fluency in Arabic, and a strong understanding of the Arab cultural landscape in the UK and across the region.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Communications, Marketing and Campaigns
- Deliver communications and audience engagement activity across digital, print, press and partner channels.
- Develop and deliver campaigns promoting programmes, events, courses, memberships, fundraising initiatives and organisational priorities.
- Contribute to earned income by supporting campaigns that increase course enrolments, event attendance, memberships and other paid or income-generating opportunities.
- Maintain a clear communications calendar, coordinate content and deadlines, and ensure activity is aligned with programme and organisational plans.
- Write, edit and proofread clear, accessible and engaging copy for different audiences and channels.
- Support brand consistency across communications, campaign materials and public-facing assets.
- Use audience insights, booking information, and campaign results to help identify opportunities to increase reach, participation, and income.
Digital Communications, Website and Content
- Manage and refresh social media channels, newsletters, website content and digital campaigns in line with the Centre’s voice and visual identity.
- Create and commission written, graphic and video content, using appropriate design and content-creation tools.
- Coordinate website improvements with developers, including content, user experience, testing and new functionality.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date web content and support colleagues to supply timely programme information.
- Use analytics and audience insight, including website, email, social media and booking data, to monitor performance, report on results and improve future activity.
Press and Media Relations
- Develop and maintain media relationships and relevant press contacts.
- Draft press releases, media briefings, listings, newsletters, and other press materials.
- Coordinate press activity around key programmes, the 50th Anniversary, SAFAR Film Festival, Courses and similar and future initiatives.
- Respond to press enquiries and represent the Centre professionally at press, partner and networking events where required.
Events, Courses and Audience Development
- Coordinate promotion for events and programmes, working closely with programme colleagues and external partners.
- Support course promotion, student recruitment and customer communications, helping to improve take-up, retention and the learner experience.
- Contribute to audience development by helping to grow, diversify and deepen engagement with the Centre’s audiences across digital and in-person channels.
- Support outreach to Arab, Arab British and wider cultural communities, helping to build relationships that increase participation in events, programmes and courses.
- Support event delivery, including occasional evening and weekend work, and help ensure high-quality customer-facing communications.
Person Specification
The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator in spoken and written English, with Arabic language skills that support cultural understanding, awareness of tone and confident spoken engagement. They will bring the judgement, creativity and organisational skills needed to support a varied communications, events, and audience-development workload within a small team.

- At least three years’ relevant experience in communications, marketing, events or audience engagement, or demonstrable success delivering related projects through study, placements, freelance work or volunteering.
- Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to create clear, engaging and accessible content for different audiences and channels.
- Strong digital communications skills, including experience with social media, newsletters, website content, campaign planning and analytics, and confidence using or learning tools such as email marketing platforms, basic design tools and social media scheduling or insight platforms.
- Experience supporting or delivering integrated marketing or audience-development campaigns, ideally including work that increases engagement, attendance, enrolments or income.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage deadlines, coordinate event promotion, and turn ideas into well-executed activity.
- A proactive, creative, and self-motivated approach, with strong attention to detail and sound judgement.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and confidence in building positive working relationships with colleagues, partners, artists, press and audiences.
- An interest in and knowledge of arts and culture from the Arab World / Southwest Asia and North Africa region.
- A commitment to broadening access to arts and culture, with an interest in reaching diverse audiences and communities.
- Ability to work on occasional evenings and weekends for events.
- Experience with WordPress or another website content management system.
- Experience using email marketing platforms such as Mailchimp.
- Experience using analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Meta Insights or similar platforms.
- Graphic design, photography or video-editing skills and familiarity with appropriate content creation software such as Canva or Adobe tools.
- Experience of media relations, press campaigns, or working with external agencies and developers.
- Experience working on cultural events, festivals, courses, or anniversary campaigns
