Job description

About Mitigrate

Mitigrate is a VC-backed ClimateTech and InsurTech SaaS startup providing automated analyses to guide preventive measures for reducing climate risks in real estate. Our platform integrates high-resolution satellite imagery, machine learning, and optimisation algorithms to predict and prioritise over 40 climate-positive measures for mitigating risks.

Our clients include insurance companies, banks, and municipalities, and our work spans individual assets and large portfolios of property. Recognised as one of Europe's most innovative InsurTech startups, Mitigrate has been part of the Lloyd's Lab accelerator in London and has secured a Horizon EU project for insurance product innovation.

Position overview

We are looking for a Senior Catastrophe Vulnerability Modeller specialised in Building Risk to strengthen our modelling capabilities for climate risk assessment.

In this role, you will focus on developing vulnerability models that translate building characteristics into quantitative damage and risk assessments, with a particular focus on flood risk. Your work will help improve how physical building attributes—such as materials, structural systems, building typologies, construction standards, and construction age—are represented within Mitigrate's risk assessment platform.

Working closely with data scientists, geospatial engineers, and product teams, you will help build scalable models that enable insurers and financial institutions to better understand and prevent climate-related losses.

Key responsibilities
Vulnerability and catastrophe modelling
  • Develop and refine building vulnerability models for natural catastrophe risks, particularly flooding.
  • Translate building characteristics into numerical models that estimate potential damage and risk exposure.
  • Design and calibrate vulnerability functions based on empirical data, engineering knowledge, and scientific literature.
Building risk modelling
  • Develop methodologies to represent building attributes such as construction type, materials, structural systems, building age, and construction standards.
  • Create frameworks to convert physical building characteristics into model-ready variables.
  • Support the development of building classification approaches used within Mitigrate's platform.
Model development and implementation
  • Implement vulnerability models in Python and integrate them into Mitigrate's analytical platform.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure models can scale across large property portfolios.
  • Validate and test modelling approaches using real-world datasets.
Collaboration and research
  • Work closely with data scientists, geospatial engineers, and product teams to translate research models into production tools.
  • Stay up to date with developments in catastrophe risk modelling, vulnerability assessment, and climate risk science.
  • Contribute to internal research and innovation around climate risk prevention.
Qualifications
Core requirements
  • Master's degree or PhD in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Catastrophe Risk Modelling, Natural Hazard Science, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in catastrophe risk modelling, vulnerability modelling, structural risk assessment, or a related domain.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and experience with scientific computing or data analysis.
Domain expertise
  • Strong understanding of building typologies, construction materials, and structural systems.
  • Knowledge of building codes, construction practices, and how buildings respond to natural hazards.
  • Experience translating engineering knowledge into quantitative vulnerability or damage models.
Skills and attributes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work across interdisciplinary teams combining engineering, data science, and software development.
  • Clear communication skills and ability to explain technical concepts.
Bonus skills
  • Experience working with catastrophe modelling frameworks or risk platforms.
  • Experience with geospatial data and property-level risk analysis.
  • Familiarity with flood risk modelling or hydrological hazards.
What we offer
  • Competitive salary and equity in a fast-growing startup.
  • Opportunities to work on cutting-edge climate risk and prevention technologies.
  • A supportive, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.
  • Career growth opportunities within Mitigrate.
