Offer Description

Key information

The Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) is seeking a skilled and well-organised employee to work with the calculation and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals from the land use sector (LULUCF – Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry).

We are looking to strengthen the capacity of the team responsible for greenhouse gas accounting for the land use sector. In addition to preparing the national greenhouse gas inventory that Norway submits annually to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in collaboration with the Norwegian Environment Agency and Statistics Norway, we also deliver a range of other relevant statistics and tools related to the land use sector. These outputs form part of international reporting obligations, serve as a knowledge base for public administration and policy development, and are used in various research projects.

Because the results are used in this way, both nationally and internationally, and to monitor climate status and Norway’s climate commitments, the work requires a high degree of accuracy, quality assurance, traceability, and verifiability (transparency). As part of this professional environment, you will be responsible for tasks that have a real impact on climate action and policy.

The position is based at NIBIO’s headquarters in Ås, located 30 km south of Oslo.

Main responsibilities

Perform data processing, calculations, analyses, and reporting of quantitative results related to:

  • The national greenhouse gas inventory and municipality-level greenhouse gas accounts for the land use sector
  • A spatially explicit greenhouse gas calculator and natural capital accounting for the ecosystem service of global climate regulation
  • A range of projects and assignments related to the national greenhouse gas inventory for the land use sector, including analyses and reporting of trends in greenhouse gas emissions and removals associated with land‑use change and different land-use categories
  • Maintain and further develop reproducible data workflows, ensuring high standards of documentation, quality assurance, transparency, and traceability.
Required qualifications
  • Strong programming skills in R.
  • Strong written and spoken English skills.
  • Strong written and spoken Norwegian skills (or Swedish or Danish).
  • At least two of the qualifications listed under the "Additional Qualifications Considered an Advantage" section.
Additional Qualifications Considered an Advantage
  • Knowledge of greenhouse gas accounting for the land use sector (LULUCF – Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry)
  • Experience with the reporting of natural capital accounts, greenhouse gas inventories, or related environmental accounting frameworks
  • Knowledge of carbon dynamics and carbon cycle processes
  • Familiarity with public administration and/or experience working within a government agency or ministry
  • Experience with Git and GitHub for version control and collaborative software development.
NIBIO
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across disciplines and sectors
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, combined with a structured and solution-oriented approach to complex challenges
  • A proactive, self-motivated, and results-oriented work style, with a strong sense of responsibility and accountability
  • A genuine interest in and commitment to contributing to high-impact research and scientific excellence
  • Proven ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and to engage constructively with experts from a broad range of academic and professional backgrounds.
Salary and benefits
  • Opportunity to work on an important social mission with focus on sustainability and future-oriented projects
  • Challenging, exciting and varied tasks in interdisciplinary teams
  • A flexible everyday life with the opportunity to influence one's own work tasks
  • A skilled professional environment with good colleagues
  • A generous personnel policy with welfare schemes that focus on employees' different stages of life

The position is remunerated according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale as Advisor/Senior advisor code 1434/1364, NOK 575.000 - 850.000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
