Job description

Join us and shape the quantum devices of tomorrow!

At QuTech, the Electronics team develops advanced electronic instrumentation and supports researchers with expert advice. We are seeking a Team Lead Electronics to drive this work forward and help shape the future of our labs.

In this role, you will lead a small team of three specialists. Leadership is an integral part of the position and is reflected across all aspects of the work, including technical design, team guidance, anticipating future needs, and initiating new concepts. You will be responsible for setting direction, ensuring quality, fostering collaboration within the team, and actively contributing to the team’s growth.

Given the size and nature of the team, this is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will be deeply involved in the design, realization, and support of measurement electronics, working closely with researchers and contributing directly to technical solutions rather than only steering from a distance. This role is ideal for a technical leader who takes initiative and actively guides the team’s direction through both leadership and expertise.

Your daily responsibilities include:

  • Delivering instrumentation, whether home-built, off-the-shelf, or adapted, for quantum technology research labs.
  • Advising researchers on instrumentation and measurement issues, and identifying improvements beyond the initial request.
  • Initiating and driving short- and long-term projects by translating research needs into electronics proposals and instruments.
  • Creating roadmaps, definitions, and requirements for delivering electronics to the labs.
  • Conducting independent research on electronics for quantum research.
  • Staying informed about developments in the electronics market related to quantum research.
  • Coordinating the activities of team members within projects or assignments.
  • Maintaining an extensive catalogue of previously developed electronics.
  • Representing and promoting the team within the organization.
  • Participating in organizational or technical working groups, committees, or project teams.

As team lead, you guide an autonomous engineering team through technical discussions, ensuring high-quality results and building shared expertise. You coordinate long-term development projects, serve as the main contact for management, and maintain regular communication with other engineering teams and university support groups.

This role also includes an educational component. You and your team teach and update an electronics course for researchers, and you supervise HBO-level internship students.

Requirements

Our ideal candidate has a broad background in both analog and digital electronics. The role spans many technical domains, including low noise analog frontends, RF and microwave engineering, EMC and isolation, signal filtering, ADC/DACs, PCB and high frequency design. Familiarity with lab instrumentation is particularly valuable. You do not need to be an expert in every area, but you should feel confident navigating all of them.

You bring:

  • A master’s degree in Electronics (or equivalent experience), or a degree in quantum-related Physics with demonstrable electronics expertise.
  • Leadership experience managing a small technical team.
  • A practical, hands-on, and analytical mindset, able to provide quick technical solutions.
  • The ability to plan and reason about high-level system architectures.
  • The ability to translate research questions into electronics requirements and vice versa.
  • A proactive, collaborative, and self-starting attitude.
  • Interest in cutting-edge Physics; knowledge of quantum systems is an advantage.
  • Genuine interest in your colleagues’ work and eagerness to share your own.
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills; teaching experience is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in English; Dutch proficiency is preferred, or willingness to learn it.

  • An excellent pension scheme via the ABP.
  • The possibility to compile an individual employment package every year.

  • Every year, 232 leave hours (at 38 hours). You can also sell or buy additional leave hours via the individual choice budget.
  • Plenty of opportunities for education, training and courses.
  • Partially paid parental leave.
  • Attention for working healthy and energetically with the vitality program.
  • Relocation support for those moving to the Netherlands, including services for settling in and support for an accompanying partner’s job search.
