Amstelveen, Netherlands | Posted on 14/10/2026
We are looking for an experienced System & Storage Engineer who keeps the infrastructure running and steers the handover to an external managed service provider.
Please note: For this position, we are looking for candidates who are already based in the Netherlands and have a good command of both Dutch and English. Unfortunately, we are unable to consider applications from candidates who do not meet these requirements.
By the end of this year the in-house data centre will be closed and physical management moves to a third party. In the first phase OS management stays in-house; after that it gradually moves to the supplier as well. During this period you are the technical linchpin: you manage the environment yourself, understand the chains servers are part of, and make sure knowledge, responsibilities and quality are handed over properly.
The role therefore shifts over time: from mainly hands‑on management to technical alignment with, steering and assessing the supplier.
What you will do
Virtualisation and servers
- Manage, maintain and optimise the VMware environment (vSphere/ESXi, vCenter)
- Manage physical and virtual servers: capacity, patching, lifecycle and monitoring
- Resolve complex (3rd-line) incidents and identify the root cause
Operating systems
- Manage Windows Server and Linux environments, including hardening, updates and standardisation
- Ensure configurations are documented and transferable
Storage and file shares
- Manage storage environments: capacity, performance, snapshots, replication and backup/restore
- Set up and restructure file shares with a clear access model: data owners per share who decide on access themselves, supported by group-based permissions
- Clean up sprawling permissions and structures, and keep the model manageable
- Keep the existing remote desktop solutions (e.g. RDS / Citrix) running and managed
- Ensure these services remain stable during and after the transition
Chains and dependencies
- Maintain an overview of the chain servers are part of: applications, network, identity, storage and backup
- Assess the impact of changes upfront and align with application management, network and security
Transition and supplier management
You guide the transition in three phases and act as the technical point of contact for the supplier.
- Preparation (now – end 2026): inventory servers, dependencies and chains; get documentation and runbooks in order; contribute to migration planning and fallback scenarios
- Handover of physical management (end 2026): guide the move/transition of the data centre; verify that services work as agreed after the switch
- Gradual handover of OS management (2027): transfer knowledge to the supplier, hand over responsibilities step by step, and assess whether the supplier can handle the management
Ongoing:
- Align technically with the supplier and steer them on content
- Monitor agreements (SLA/DAP): quality, lead times, incidents and changes
- Review the supplier's proposals, designs and changes
- Flag risks and escape where needed
- Ensure the organisation retains enough knowledge to stay in control after the transition
Requirements
- At least bachelor's (HBO) level of work and thinking
- At least 7 years of experience as a system engineer in an enterprise environment, demonstrably at senior / 3rd-line level
- Extensive hands‑on experience with VMware vSphere/ESXi and vCenter
- Solid knowledge of both Windows Server and Linux
- Experience with enterprise storage (SAN/NAS) and backup/restore
- Experience setting up file shares and access management via groups and data owners (NTFS/AD)
- Experience managing remote desktop environments (RDS and/or Citrix)
- Experience working with or steering an external managed service provider or outsourcing supplier
- Good command of Dutch and English, spoken and written
Nice to have
- Experience with a data centre exit, migration or outsourcing transition
- Certifications such as VMware VCP, Microsoft (Windows Server / Azure), Red Hat (RHCSA/RHCE) or storage certifications (NetApp, Dell EMC, Pure)
- Knowledge of ITIL and contract management (SLA, DAP, KPIs)
- Experience with scripting and automation (PowerShell, Bash, Ansible)
- Knowledge of hybrid or cloud environments (Azure, AWS)
- Experience in a complex or regulated environment (e.g. financial sector, government, healthcare)
Who you are
You are a broad, experienced engineer who is just as comfortable rolling up your sleeves as keeping a supplier sharp on content.
- Chain thinking: you never see a server in isolation, but as part of a service with dependencies
- Control and persuasiveness: you steer an external party on content, without hierarchical authority
- Critical and thorough: you assess what the supplier delivers and keep asking questions
- Knowledge transfer: you document clearly and bring others along
- Adaptability: you are at home in a role that shifts from doing to directing
What do we offer?
- An initial 12-month employment contract, with the intention of transitioning to a permanent position directly with our client within a maximum of 18 months.
- A gross monthly salary between €5,000 and €5,500, depending on your experience.
- 35 days of annual leave.
- Additional benefits including holiday allowance, a 13th-month payment and pension contributions.
