Job summary

Innovate in the South Rotterdam area is seeking a Senior PLC Programmer with a strong Siemens background to design, test, optimise and Commission software for advanced industrial washing installations used worldwide.

You will work closely with software, electrical and mechanical engineers across the full project lifecycle, from development and testing through on-site commissioning, with international travel as required.

Qualifications

• Experience in PLC programming and industrial automation.

Are you an experienced PLC Programmer with a strong Siemens background and a passion for complex machine control systems? We are recruiting on behalf of our client, an international engineering business specialising in industrial machinery and automation solutions for the food-processing sector.

They are looking for a Senior PLC Programmer to develop, test, optimise and commission software for advanced industrial washing installations used by customers worldwide.

This is a hands-on role offering the opportunity to influence technical decisions, improve software standards and work closely with software, electrical and mechanical engineering specialists.

The role

You will take responsibility for the development, maintenance and optimisation of control software for industrial machinery. Working closely with Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Project Management, you will contribute throughout the full project lifecycle, from software development and testing through to commissioning at customer sites.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain PLC software for Siemens S7 control systems.
• Develop and maintain HMI applications using Siemens TIA Portal.
• Test, troubleshoot and optimise control software and machine functionality.
• Support software-related activities throughout engineering projects.
• Improve and standardise existing software structures and functionality.
• Implement data logging, remote-service functionality and cloud-based solutions.
• Provide technical support to colleagues and assist with fault diagnosis.
• Commission, test and optimise machines at customer sites in the Netherlands and internationally.
• Maintain a high standard of software quality, reliability and documentation.
• Contribute ideas for the continued development of machine controls and software standards.

Skills and experience required

• Strong commercial experience in PLC programming and industrial automation.
• Proven experience working with Siemens S7 control systems.
• Good knowledge of Siemens TIA Portal and HMI development.
• Experience developing software for machinery, production equipment or automated systems.
• Experience with commissioning, troubleshooting and optimisation in an industrial environment.
• Ability to interpret technical requirements and translate them into robust software solutions.
• Experience working collaboratively with electrical, mechanical and project engineering teams.
• A structured and quality-focused approach to software development.
• Ability to work independently, take ownership of technical decisions and support less experienced colleagues.
• Willingness to travel internationally for commissioning and customer support.
• Strong communication skills in English; Dutch language skills would be advantageous.
• A relevant qualification in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Software Engineering or a related discipline would be beneficial.
