ING is seeking a Senior Java Engineer in Amsterdam to help build next generation frontend delivery services used globally. You will work on a platform with Java 21, Stream API, functional programming, Spring Boot, microservices and Kafka, within the Retail & Banking Technology domain.

You will join Squad Bifrost, focusing on migrations and production readiness, delivering high-performing, scalable solutions.

Qualifications

For ING, we are looking for a highly skilled Senior Java Engineer to help build the next generation of frontend delivery services.

You will work on a platform that is used globally within ING. We are specifically looking for an engineer with strong, up-to-date hands-on knowledge of Java 21, including the Stream API and functional programming concepts, combined with experience in Spring Boot, microservices and Kafka.

The role

You will work within the Retail & Banking Technology domain as part of a multidisciplinary team working on ING’s core platform. The team is developing a platform for building and providing Web Components that are used globally within ING.

You will join Squad Bifrost, which forms a large part of the Frontend Foundation Web area. The team focuses on improving the way ING integrates and deploys code, from concept all the way through to production.

The goal is to deliver a high-performing, scalable and fast solution that can be used globally. The squad’s immediate focus is the migration of the Frontend Controller to Java.

What will you do?

As a Senior Java Engineer, you will be involved throughout the entire development lifecycle, from refinement and development to deployment, monitoring and production support.

Your responsibilities include:

• Develop and improve frontend delivery services using Java.
• Contribute to the migration of the Frontend Controller to Java.
• Be involved in the entire development lifecycle, from refinement to monitoring in production.
• Maintain and support existing products.
• Provide support and contribute to incident management.
• Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation once every 4 to 8 weeks.
• Create and maintain product risk documentation.
• Contribute to a realistic roadmap for the squad.
• Help create a safe and productive working environment.
• Support colleagues and share knowledge within the team.
• Become an ING Security Champion for the team

The team works with technologies and frameworks including:

Within Azure DevOps, the team uses Repos, Pipelines, Boards and Artifacts. The applications run on a Container Hosting Platform using OpenShift and Kubernetes, with new features delivered into production every two weeks.

Requirements

What do you bring?

We are looking for someone with:

• Strong, up-to-date hands-on knowledge of Java 21 (LTS), including practical experience with the Java Stream API.
• Working knowledge of functional programming concepts.
• Hands-on experience with Kafka and asynchronous communication in distributed IT environments.
• Experience with Spring Boot / recent Spring versions.
• Strong knowledge of microservices.
• Strong experience with Azure and Azure DevOps.
• Experience with NoSQL and SQL databases.
• Knowledge of performance, capacity and availability, including Elasticsearch and Kibana.
• Strong knowledge of networking, including DNS and HTTP.
• Strong knowledge of security, including TLS and PKI.
• Experience working in an Agile/Scrum/DevOps environment.
• Strong analytical skills and conceptual/architectural understanding.
• The ability to quickly understand new technical concepts.
• A passion for automation and continuous improvement.
• Strong technical communication skills and the ability to engage with customers.
• A team-oriented mindset and willingness to share knowledge and learn from different perspectives.
• A professional, secure and careful way of working.

Nice to have

It is a plus if you have experience with:

• Performance testing using Gatling.
• Test automation, continuous delivery, deployment tools and pipelines.
• Working in multidisciplinary and Agile teams.

• Application risk controls and proactively preventing security and operational risks.

Please note

For this position, we can only consider candidates who are currently living in the Netherlands.

What do we offer?

• A contract until 31 December 2026, with the possibility of extension.
• A salary range of €4,596.95-€5,892.02 gross per month, based on 36 hours per week and depending on experience.
• Additional benefits, including holiday allowance, a 13th-month payment and pension contribution.
