Job summary

Omek is seeking a Staff Data Scientist in Amsterdam to own harvest forecast accuracy for tomato, pepper, and cucumber. You will design hybrid models combining crop physiology with climate data and ML, build robust evaluation, and ship production-grade solutions.

You will collaborate with data scientists, crop scientists and growers, shaping end-to-end forecasting systems across crops. A PhD/ MSc and 10+ years in real-world forecasting are preferred.

Qualifications

• Around 10 years of hands-on modelling or forecasting in production environments.
• You have taken a forecast people did not trust and made it one a business commits money on.
• You shipped models that broke when the world changed and fixed them.
• Deep expertise in time series and probabilistic forecasting: Bayesian methods and uncertainty quantification.
• Validation that holds up: backtests, strong baselines and drift monitoring.
• Production-grade Python and solid engineering habits to run in production.
• An MSc or PhD and principled reasoning.
• You work AI-native: using AI tools daily and understand their limitations.
• You have worked alongside high standards and learned from it.
• Clear communication with growers, product and engineering.

Responsibilities

• Own the accuracy of harvest forecasts, especially in unusual weeks.
• Decide which problem to tackle first, including data inputs and grower plans.
• Design and build hybrid models combining crop physiology with ML methods.
• Build evaluation backbone: backtests, baselines, uncertainty calibration, monitoring.
• Ship models to production with engineers and monitor behavior there.
• Raise the bar of the data science team through review and mentoring.
