Job summary

Backbase is seeking an Engineering Team Lead (Backend Java) to steer a squad of 6 to 9 engineers. You will combine hands-on coding with high-level design, ensuring secure and scalable architectures while mentoring the team.

You will spend time on system design, code reviews, and leadership activities like hiring and calibration, delivering predictable outcomes and fostering an inclusive engineering culture.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience with recent production code contributions.
• Strong grounding in system design and architecture patterns.
• T-shaped profile with deep expertise and broad full-stack competence.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and test automation.
• Experience with observability practices and quality-focused development.
• Willingness to lead AI tooling adoption within the team.

Responsibilities

• Lead and participate in system design reviews, RFCs and architecture decisions.
• Maintain technical credibility through code reviews, debugging production issues, and unblocking the team.
• Champion modern engineering practices including CI/CD, test automation, observability and release management.
• Identify risky designs and unrealistic estimates early to prevent delivery problems.
• Lead during critical incidents and coordinate response under pressure.
• Drive adoption of agentic tooling, LLM workflows and AI automation within the squad.
