Job summary

Toku Pte Ltd, with its Rotterdam base, is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build and operate distributed systems powering its cloud communications platform. You will work primarily in Go, contributing to customer-facing services, APIs and backend infrastructure.

You will own production systems, focus on scalability, reliability and observability, and collaborate across squads to modernise backend services, adopt event-driven architecture, and optimise SQL and NoSQL data stores.

Qualifications

• Strong backend engineering with Go and production ownership.
• Experience designing, building and operating distributed systems and microservices.
• Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, SQS, RabbitMQ).
• API design and integration with external providers and internal services.
• Cloud platforms and AWS fundamentals; exposure to Azure or GCP is a plus.
• Strong SQL skills with data modeling and performance tuning; NoSQL experience a bonus.
• Observability tooling experience (Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Datadog).
• Ability to influence technical direction and drive improvements across squads.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and evolve backend services and APIs powering the platform.
• Develop scalable distributed systems and microservices with sound architectural decisions.
• Build and evolve event-driven platforms for high-volume asynchronous workflows.
• Create backend integrations with external providers and internal services.
• Develop and operate backend services on AWS using cloud-native principles.
• Own production systems including monitoring, incident response and reliability improvements.
• Contribute to platform evolution with Go and distributed systems modernization.
• Design SQL data models and exposure to NoSQL technologies is a plus.
• Write clean, well-tested code and participate in design reviews and decisions.
• Identify tech debt and drive improvements across multiple squads.
