Job summary

The British School in the Netherlands (BSN) in Voorschoten is seeking a Science Technician to support the delivery of our science curriculum, full-time or part-time. The role focuses on Chemistry or Physics expertise to aid the Senior School Voorschoten campus and its science program.

You will assist with lesson preparation, stock management, equipment maintenance, health & safety compliance and the development of specialist resources for Biology, Chemistry and Physics teaching across year

Qualifications

• Experience working in a laboratory environment with a strong understanding of Health & Safety.
• Proficient in English (written and spoken).
• Knowledge of Dutch is an advantage; a science-related qualification and secondary school experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare for lessons, contribute to trials, and support demonstrations and practical experiments.
• Ensure safe handling and disposal of materials, reporting hazards to staff as needed.
• Maintain stock levels and secure safe storage of equipment and materials.
• Carry out routine and non-routine equipment checks, calibration, testing and repairs.
• Assist in designing and maintaining specialist resources and long-term projects.
• Stay up-to-date with health and safety procedures through CPD.

Job description

Senior School Voorschoten (SSV) is looking for a Science Technician in a full-time or part-time capacity to support the delivery of our science curriculum. Specialist skills in the areas of Chemistry or Physics are particularly welcome.

Our learners study a combined science course in Years 7 and 8 before moving on to being taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics in Year 9 by subject specialists in preparation for GCSEs and beyond. Year 12 and 13 study either the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) or UK A level courses in Science disciplines. We have a team of 5 technicians. The Technician team supports the teaching staff in the delivery of the school's science curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare for lessons, contribute to trials, contribute to technical demonstrations and practical experiments;
• Ensure the safe treatment and disposal of used materials, including hazardous substances, and respond to actual and potential hazards, liaising with Concierges and School Health Officers when relevant;
• Ensure that the appropriate levels of stock are ordered and maintained and take care of the healthy and safe storage and accessibility of equipment and materials;
• Ensure that both routine and non-routine checking, cleaning, maintenance, calibration, testing and repairing of equipment are carried out to the required standard;
• Contribute to the design, development and maintenance of specialist resources and/or long-term projects, including constructing and modifying apparatus;
• Keep up to date with current procedures, practices and health and safety requirements through continuing professional development.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will have:

• Good standard of education, experience of working in a laboratory environment and an understanding of Health & Safety within this setting;
• Excellent English, both written and spoken;
• Knowledge of the Dutch language will be considered an advantage as will a science qualification and experience of working in a secondary school environment;
• Ability to work well within a team of science technicians as well as independently without supervision;
• Have a strong initiative and problem-solving skills.

The salary range for this position is 2894,49- 3451,73 gross EUR monthly (full-time), depending on experience. All figures shown are including the 9% holiday allowance.
