Job description

Be part of a movement to change the way Europe pays

In today’s digital Europe, payments still feel too complicated. Random delays, confusing rules, extra apps and accounts make it harder than it should be to pay and get paid.

The European Payments Initiative is changing that with Wero, a proudly European digital wallet to make payments easier, clearer and more secure. Online, in store, at home and across borders, with your money and data protected under European laws and regulations.

Wero is live in Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands and launching very soon in Luxembourg and Austria. Backed by 16 major banks and the two largest European acquirers, we’re building a brand new, proudly European payment system.

What's In It For You
  • Working in a large payment company but looking for a more agile environment where your contributions have visible impact? At EPI, you'll help shape the rules and governance of a brand-new European payment scheme.
  • Tired of highly segmented roles with limited visibility? You'll work directly with senior leaders, member banks and key stakeholders across the European payments ecosystem.
  • Want to be part of an ambitious and innovative payment initiative? You'll contribute to building the foundations of a truly European payment solution serving millions of users.

At EPI, we embrace a remote-first culture, enabling our teams to work remotely from the country they are based in, with in-person meetings at least once a quarter to foster collaboration and connection.

About The Team

You’ll report to our Chief Scheme Officer, one of EPI’s executive leaders with more than 20 years of international experience in payments. The team brings together experienced specialists across Scheme Rules, Certification & Approval and Fraud Management, located throughout Europe.

You’ll work closely with internal stakeholders, member banks and prospective members to ensure the robustness, compliance and evolution of EPI’s scheme framework.

Your impact
  • Create, review and maintain EPI’s operating rules and regulations by translating market, product and regulatory requirements into clear and effective scheme documentation.
  • Collaborate with EPI teams, member banks and stakeholders to ensure the scheme framework evolves alongside business and regulatory needs.
  • Manage the onboarding process of new PSP applicants for EPI membership, ensuring completeness, consistency and compliance of submissions.
  • Assess applicant documentation from risk, financial stability and AML perspectives, identifying potential concerns and areas requiring clarification.
  • Prepare recommendations for the Membership Management Committee, highlighting risks, observations and onboarding decisions.
  • Act as a key point of contact for applicant institutions throughout the membership assessment process.
  • Ensure accurate management, storage and governance of membership and scheme-related documentation.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of governance frameworks supporting EPI’s growth and expansion.
Technology stack
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Confluence
  • Microsoft Office 365
  • Collaboration and documentation management tools
  • Regulatory and governance documentation frameworks
To succeed, you should meet at least 70% of these requirements
  • 5+ years of professional experience in payments, scheme management, regulatory affairs, risk management or a related function.
  • A degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Law or a related field is preferred.
  • Fluent in English (CEFR C1 or C2); French, German, Dutch or other European languages are a plus.
  • Thrive in a remote-first, multicultural environment.
  • Strong knowledge of the European payments landscape, including EPC SCT Inst, account-to-account payments, payment regulations and scheme dynamics.
  • Proven experience drafting, reviewing or maintaining rules and regulations within a payment scheme or comparable environment.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex regulatory and business concepts into clear documentation.
  • Experience working in a financial institution, payment scheme, fintech or regulated payments organization.
  • Knowledge of risk management, financial stability assessments and AML-related controls within payments environments.
Turn back if …
  • You’re looking for an already highly structured environment with no ambiguity or evolving processes.
  • You expect rapid promotion without first building deep expertise and impact in the role.
  • You prefer operational execution only and have little interest in governance, rules and regulatory frameworks.
What We Can Offer
  • Remote-first culture with quarterly and annual all-staff in-person meetups to keep teams connected and collaborative.
  • Possibility to work from another EU country for up to 3 months per year.
  • Competitive compensation package, featuring salary, performance-based bonus, and a thoughtfully designed, high-quality benefits program.
  • The opportunity to be part of a multicultural European company.
  • Learning & development budget: €5,000 training budget per year.
