Position Summary:

THE PRIMARY DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE REGISTERED NURSE IS THE PRACTICE OF NURSING AS DEFINED BY THE STATE OF NEBRASKA NURSE PRACTICE ACT. THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE REGISTERED

NURSE INCLUDE THE IDENTIFICAITON AND INTERVENTION IN ACTUAL OR POTENTIAL HEALTH PROBEMS OF INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, OR GROUPS. THE PRACTICE OF NURSING IS DIRECTED TOWARD MAINTAINING HEALTH STATUS,

PREVENTING ILLNESS, INJURY OR INFIRMITY, IMPROVING HEALTH STATUS, AND PROVIDING CARE SUPPORTIVE TO AND/OR RESTORATIVE OF LIFE AND WELLBEING THROUGH NURSING ASSESSMENT AND THROUG THE EXECUTION OF NURSING CARE AND OF DIAGNOSTIC OR THERAPEUTIC REGIMENS AS PRESCRIBED BY THE LICENSED PRACTITIONER.

Essential Job Functions Duties And Responsibilities
  • Delivers nursing care utilizing standards of clinical nursing practice.
  • Collect and assess objective and subjective patient health data through observations, examinations, interviews and written records, involving the patient, significant others, and health providers in data collection when appropriate.
  • Establishes nursing diagnosis based on patient condition or needs.
  • Establishes goals, outcomes and individualized plans of care in collaboration with the patient, significant others and other health care providers, when appropriate, to meet the health care needs of the patient.
  • Prescribing and implementing nursing interventions in order to implement the plan of care.
  • Utilizing ongoing assessment and evaluation of patient condition and needs to revise diagnoses/ patient problems, outcome, and the plan of care as needed.

Documentation
  • Prepares complete and concise assessment documentation through flow sheet charting as well as written nurses notes in the EMR. Documentation should reflect all assessments made, interventions carried out, and evaluations of responses to interventions.
  • The frequency of assessments is based upon the acuity of the patient. The documentation policy states the least number of assessments/ nursing interventions. A nurse may always assess the patient’s status more frequently than required by policy.
Administration of Medications and Treatments
  • Documents current patient medications through electronic medication reconciliation in the Dr. First program linked to the EMR.
  • Utilizes BCMA for the administration and second-check of medications during administration to patients.
  • Reports the potential for unsafe medication delivery/harm using Incident Tracker’s medication error form.
  • Works in collaboration with ePharmacy and medical staff to calculate drug doses and drip rates in order to administer appropriate doses of medications to patients.
Organization
  • Establishes priorities and organizes work for efficient delivery of patient care. Demonstrates ability to adapt to changes in work load or patient assignments.
Computer Skills
  • Generation of MAR, documentation in MAR
  • Patient admission—able to admit and document all steps of a patient admission according to policy.
  • Patient Transfer—Able to transfer a patient in an emergency situation and correctly completes all required transfer paperwork according to EMTALA and KCHS policy.
Customer Service
  • Assists all patients, family members/significant others, physicians, visitors and employees in a friendly manner.
  • Introduces self and uses caring, thoughtful words either in person or on the telephone.
  • Demonstrates ethical and appropriate behavior for a healthcare environment to include, but not limited to, dignity, patient’s rights and privacy, and the maintenance of confidentiality of patient information.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and uses same in practice.
  • Notifies the Infection Control Nurse of real or potential exposures.
Risk Management & Safety Program
  • Demonstrates adherence to risk management and safety policies and codes as evidenced by in-service attendance records and employee practices.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment for patient and co-workers.
  • Follows all general safety rules.
  • Notified the Safety Director and/or Risk Manager of incidents involving injury or having the potential for injury. Submits incident reports according to hospital policy.
Educational Responsibilities

  • Attends mandatory Safety/NIMS in-services yearly
  • Completes other required certifications or classes as necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.

Qualifications
Education and/or Experience:
  • Associate’s Degree or above in Nursing
