BioFashionTech invites motivated interns for a hands-on role in bioprocessing, enzymatic recycling and biomass/textile waste valorisation at our Groningen site. This 6–12 month internship supports fermentation, downstream processing and lab-scale demonstrations in an early-stage biotech setting.
You will gain practical experience with feedstock evaluation, experimental design, data analysis and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Join BioFashionTech for a hands-on internship in bioprocessing, enzymatic recycling and biomass/textile waste valorisation.
This is a recurring internship opportunity with positions available throughout the year. Immediate start is possible depending on candidate availability.
BioFashionTech is a biotechnology company developing innovative recycling solutions for complex textile and biomass waste streams.
We work at the intersection of biotechnology, bioprocessing, circular economy and material recycling, combining scientific research with practical industrial applications.
Our work focuses on understanding and improving biological processes that can convert complex waste streams into valuable recovered materials and biobased feedstocks.
Duration: 6 months - 12 months
Commitment: Full-time
Start: From October 2026, with rolling start dates
Location: Groningen, The Netherlands
This is a recurring internship opportunity. We regularly welcome new interns throughout the year, and the position can start immediately depending on candidate availability.
As an intern, you will contribute to experimental work related to fermentation, enzymatic processing and the validation of different biomass and textile feedstocks.
Your activities may include:
Conduct experiments related to fermentation and enzymatic processing using different feedstocks.
Support upstream fermentation activities, including media preparation, inoculation and culture maintenance.
Perform enzymatic hydrolysis experiments and investigate the effect of different feedstocks and process conditions.
Support the evaluation of relevant process parameters and contribute to reproducibility and process optimisation studies.
Participate in downstream processing activities, including filtration, membrane-based separation and product recovery.
Perform microbiological experiments using appropriate aseptic techniques.
Collect, organise and document experimental data accurately and prepare results in the formats established by the research team.
Follow experimental protocols and progressively operate laboratory equipment independently.
Support colleagues with laboratory equipment, experimental setup, troubleshooting and general laboratory activities.
Maintain good laboratory practices, hygiene and safety standards.
Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Bioprocess Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology, Life Sciences or a related field.
Comfortable working in a hands-on laboratory environment and interested in applied biotechnology and bioprocess development.
Previous laboratory experience with microorganisms, aseptic techniques and good laboratory practices.
Experience with fermentation, centrifugation, membrane filtration, freeze drying or related laboratory equipment is an advantage.
Strong attention to detail and a problem-solving mindset.
Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment.
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
This internship offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an early-stage biotechnology company working on real scientific and industrial challenges in circular materials and recycling.
You will contribute directly to experimental research and process development, work with different biological and material feedstocks, and gain experience in translating laboratory results into knowledge relevant for technology development and scale-up.
You will work in an international and interdisciplinary environment and will have the opportunity to take increasing responsibility for your experimental work throughout the internship.
