Job summary

Royal Van Lent, based in Amsterdam, seeks a senior exterior engineer to own the design and delivery of the exterior discipline on superyachts up to 160 metres. You will develop final designs and 3D models, validating specifications to meet Class and Flag requirements before production release.

You will assess supplier proposals, coordinate with other discipline engineers, and mentor juniors while delivering on time, budget and quality targets for a one-year assignment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Naval or related engineering field.
• 5+ years of engineering experience in shipbuilding with team leadership experience.
• Proficiency in 3D design tools (AutoCAD); NX/Teamcenter/Cadmatic a plus.

Job description

Take full technical ownership of the exterior discipline on superyachts built up to 160 metres — one‑off projects where your decisions directly determine what gets built and whether it holds up.

What You'll Do

• Own the engineering scope of the exterior discipline throughout the project, accountable for quality, budget and delivery deadlines within a one-off newbuild environment.
• Develop and validate the final design, technical specifications and 3D models for exterior systems, ensuring compliance with Class and Flag requirements before release to production.
• Assess design and engineering proposals from suppliers and co‑builders for technical soundness and buildability, acting as the final technical authority on exterior solutions.
• Coordinate design decisions with engineers from other disciplines to prevent conflicts between systems during the build.
• Supervise and develop junior and senior engineers within the exterior team, safeguarding technical quality across the discipline.
• Serve as the technical point of contact for the owner's representatives, translating requirements into buildable solutions within time, budget and quality constraints.
• Identify recurring engineering issues and drive process improvements to reduce rework and lead time on future projects.

Organisation

Royal Van Lent's Amsterdam yard builds superyachts up to 160 metres, each one a one‑off project to the owner's specification — exterior engineering decisions here carry direct, non‑repeatable consequences for buildability. Its growing refit portfolio adds a different type of technical constraint: engineering around an existing structure rather than a blank sheet. The assignment reinforces the engineering team for the duration of one year.

What We Ask

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Naval Engineering, Maritime Technology or a related field.
• At least 5 years of experience as an engineer in shipbuilding, including prior experience leading or supervising a team of engineers.
• Proficiency in 3D AutoCAD; working knowledge of Siemens NX, Teamcenter and Cadmatic is an advantage.
• In‑depth technical understanding of yacht construction, production and build processes.
• Fluent in English, spoken and written, with the ability to adapt communication across owner representatives, engineers and production staff.

What's Offered

Full‑time assignment of 40 hours per week for a duration of one year, structured as a secondment (detachering). Compensation is in line with the inlener's remuneration (inlenersbeloning) and matches the terms of the client's collective labour agreement (cao).
