The Role
As a Process Engineering Intern, you will assist our engineering team in the design, analysis and optimization of production processes. You will work alongside with senior process engineers on real projects, gaining hands‑on experience with process design tools, plant data and cross‑functional collaboration.
Key opportunities
- Assist in developing process flow diagrams (PFDs), heat and material balances and basic equipment sizing,
- Support preparation and updating of P&IDs, process data sheets and operating manuals,
- Collect and analyse process data to identify bottlenecks and improvement opportunities (capacity, yield, energy use, safety),
- Participate in project meetings and assist with project engineering tasks,
- Contribute to process safety reviews (e.g. HAZOP actions follow‑up, relief system checks, interlock lists) under supervision,
- Prepare technical notes, calculations and presentations to document findings and recommendations,
- Collaborate with other disciplines (mechanical, offshore, project management) on ongoing projects.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled from a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related field (preferably at the end of the studies),
- Basic understanding of unit operations, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics,
- Familiarity with process engineering tools (e.g. Excel, MATLAB, Python or process simulators such as Aspen Plus/HYSYS/PROII) is a plus,
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with attention to detail,
- Good communication skills and ability to work in a team,
- Proactive, eager to learn and able to work independently with guidance,
- Fluent command of spoken and written English,
- Existing rights to live and work in the Netherlands,
- Available for an internship of 6 months,
- Available to start by September 1st, 2026 or no later than October 1st,
- Available to work at 5 days a week in-office with some remote working to be discussed,
- Candidate must live within a 30-minute door-to-door commute of the Rotterdam office.

The workplace
The SwitcH2 office is located in the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) in the Groot Handelsgebouw next to Rotterdam central station, where many high-tech startups are based. The location is filled with vibrant energy and smart, young, motivated people working on exciting projects, and is easy to reach by public transportation. All work is performed onsite at our Rotterdam office.
