For our Partner Van Oord, we are looking for Graduation thesis R&D Offshore Energy.

Location: Rotterdam & Gorinchem, Netherlands

Are you an ambitious and curious engineering student ready to dive into the future of offshore energy?

Join Van Oord’s R&D Offshore Engineering team and explore the technical feasibility of plowing with a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) – a cutting-edge concept that could revolutionize cable installation for offshore wind farms.

About the Assignment

You will be part of the Engineering & Estimating Production team, where innovation meets real-world application. This R&D group focuses on Offshore Energy equipment, supporting project development, new builds, and technological advancement.

Your thesis will center around the design and theoretical modeling of a jet-plow system mounted on the suction pipe of a hopper dredger. The goal: to develop a system capable of trenching difficult seabed conditions and enabling effective cable laying.

  1. Research existing literature, knowledge, and tools
  2. Further develop and refine the current TSHD jet plow concept
  3. Theoretical modeling of the jet-plow system, including:
    1. Geotechnical interaction with the plow
    2. Load calculations on the suction pipe
    3. Required bollard pull
    4. System efficiency in combination with a trencher
    5. Optional: perform scaled model testing (1:10) to validate your findings
    6. Test in various soil types
    7. Measure plow and suction pipe forces

Who You Are

  1. Enrolled in a WO Master’s program in Maritime Technology, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  2. Interested in offshore technology, soil mechanics, and theoretical modeling
  3. Analytical, proactive, and capable of working independently
  4. Experience with modeling tools such as MATLAB, SolidWorks, or FEM software is a plus
  5. Living in the Netherlands and fluent in Dutch and English
  6. Work from our offices in Rotterdam and Gorinchem, with the option to start or end your day in our in-house gym
