Job summary

Utrecht University invites applications for a Postdoctoral researcher to lead an AI-enabled recommender system for urban (re)design in the ELEVATE project. You will combine street-view imagery, GIS, mobility data, and qualitative insights to generate evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and planners.

The role requires a PhD in a relevant field, experience with foundational AI models, and strong academic writing.

Qualifications

• PhD in computer science, AI, data science, or related field.
• Experience with foundational AI model development and fine-tuning.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop an AI-powered recommender system for healthy urban (re)design.
• Integrate multi-source datasets (SVIs, GIS, mobility, qualitative data).
• Apply and adapt state-of-the-art AI/ML models with fine-tuning for ELEVATE.
• Design geographically context-sensitive recommendations to promote active mobility.
• Fine-tune, evaluate, and improve model performance with local data; ensure explainability and robustness.
• Collaborate with municipalities, urban planners, designers, and residents in co-creation workshops.
• Contribute to a public web interface for the recommender system.
• Publish high-quality scientific articles and present findings at conferences.
• Supervise MSc students and collaborate within the ELEVATE consortium.
