Job summary

The University of Twente is seeking a PhD candidate to join the Water Footprint in Action programme, focusing on analysing water use in Egypt’s horticulture sector and linking scientific insights to policy and investment decisions.

The successful candidate will develop quantitative models, measure water-saving potential, and contribute to knowledge exchange with international partners. Arabic skills are an asset; start date 1 January 2027.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in water management, agricultural systems, or environmental science.
• Strong quantitative profile with data analysis, modelling, programming experience.
• Ability to translate sustainability questions into rigorous research designs and method development.

Responsibilities

• Develop and apply quantitative approaches to analyse present and future water consumption in Egypt’s horticulture sector.
• Benchmark water footprint performance using indicators and technology benchmarks.
• Develop science-based methods to underpin incentive or finance mechanisms for improved water performance.
