Job summary

University of Amsterdam invites applications for a four-year PhD project focused on caring for groundwater within the Aquiverse program. The selected candidate will join the GID group, work with supervisors including Margreet Zwarteveen, and contribute to cross‑disciplinary, transnational research on groundwater governance and transformation.

The position offers a full-time contract (38 hours/week) for up to four years, with training through AISSR and the Graduate School of Social Sciences,

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a social science field related to development or geography.
• Experience with ethnographic research methods and rigorous writing.
• Wamiliarity with cross-cultural fieldwork and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Conduct ethnographic descriptions of groundwater caring initiatives.
• Document institutional and hydro-geological aspects of initiatives.
• Analyze historical and political-ecological drivers of groundwater depletion.
• Identify how irrigators respond to pressures affecting groundwater governance.
