Job summary

The University of Amsterdam invites applications for a PhD candidate position in the Soft Matter cluster of the IoP-WZI. The research will investigate the effectiveness of damp-proofing products across multiple length scales using advanced imaging and chemical analysis.

You will work in a vibrant, international environment, contributing to teaching activities and collaborating with leading experts in crystallization and porous media.

Qualifications

  • Completed Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or closely related field.
  • Strong interest in experimental research combining materials science, sol–gel processes, and real-world applications.
  • Affinity with imaging methods including microscopy, spectroscopy, and/or imaging techniques.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and excellent English communication.
  • Motivation to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent experimental research at multiple scales from bulk to confinement.
  • Perform systematic studies in microfluidic channels and real porous building materials under controlled conditions.
  • Use advanced imaging and spectroscopy techniques to track polycondensation in real time.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences.
  • Contribute to teaching undergraduate and master's courses in physics.
  • Collaborate with group members and TU Delft on linked projects.
