Job summary

Leiden University invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Dutch morphology and constructicography within the NWO project Morphicon. The PhD candidate will join a small team and develop a morphological constructicon for Dutch, exploring grammatical regularity vs lexical idiosyncrasy.

The successful candidate will contribute to transforming lexicographic and grammatical resources into a digital network and work with tools to aid classification and network building.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in linguistics completed before start date.
• Native or near-native Dutch and good command of academic English.
• Excellent research and analytical skills.
• Interest in grammar from descriptive/theoretical perspective.

Responsibilities

• Extract word-formation patterns and encode them in systematic schemas.
• Match complex words to schemas and annotate for network building.
• Test and evaluate digital tools to aid classification and annotation.
• Investigate Dutch morphological constructions quantitatively and qualitatively.
• Present research results at workshops and conferences.
• Publish results and write PhD thesis within appointment period.
• Assist in teaching activities at bachelor level.
• Participate in project knowledge dissemination activities.
