Leiden University invites applications for a PhD position Women in the Early Modern Language Sector within the LangPro project. The PhD candidate will study female language professionals across England and the Low Countries, examining biographical data, writings and correspondence to map opportunities in the language sector.

The role involves collaboration on a database, dissemination via articles and conferences, and potential teaching in later years.

Qualifications

• ResMA/MA with a grade of 8.0 or above on the thesis (or equivalent)
• Willingness to travel to archives in the UK, Belgium, France, and Germany (year 1–2)
• Strong research, descriptive/analytical, and persuasive writing skills
• Interest in language sector and gender studies
• English proficiency (speaking/writing/reading) and reading knowledge of Dutch/German/French
• Time-management, teamwork and independent thinking
• Ability to complete the proposed PhD in 4 years

Responsibilities

• Conduct research on the role of women in the early modern language sector.
• Complete a PhD thesis in English within four years.
• Contribute to the project’s collaborative database.
• Publish at least two co-authored articles in peer-reviewed journals or volumes.
• Present papers at conferences, nationally and internationally.
• Participate in project meetings and training activities.
• Possibly teach in years 2–3 in line with expertise and needs.
