Boskalis in the Netherlands offers an internship focused on turbidity plume forecasting in dredging projects. The assignment targets university students in hydraulic/offshore engineering or applied mathematics and invites exploration of prediction methods for low-current environments.
You will work with real data from the Sohar project and other assets, applying numerical modelling, programming or machine learning to enhance predictions. Fluent English and/or Dutch are expected.
Context of the assignment Turbidity plumes created by dredging operations can cause impact on sensitive receivers such as coral reefs, sea grass or cooling water intakes. That is why regulators set turbidity limits around dredging works. If you can predict where the plume will travel, at what intensity, and when, you can plan the operation to stay within limits while keeping the project running. Good plume forecasting is essential for an optimal balance between environmental protection and operational efficiency. There currently is a knowledge gap in what the optimum prediction method is in low current environments. This assignment considers a recent dredging operation in Sohar, Oman. The location is especially interesting due to the relatively low tidal currents, causing other drivers to dominate the turbidity plume dynamics, such as waves and wind. We are looking to investigate different methods to improve turbidity forecasts for similar locations.
Assignment The scope is flexible and shaped around your interests. A potential main question is: How can dredging-induced turbidity dispersion in low current environments best be predicted ...
Potential sub questions can be:

What you can expect
Working at Boskalis is about creating new horizons and sustainable solutions. In a world where population growth, an increase of global trade, demand for (new) energy and climate change are driving forces, we challenge you to make your mark in finding innovative and relevant solutions for complex infrastructural and marine projects. Dredging is one of our traditional core activities and Boskalis is famous for projects like the land reclamation for Manila International Airport, Pulau Tekong, Singapore’s first polder or the expansion of the Suez Canal. Creation of new nature areas like the Markerwadden is something we contribute too. In your job you will work for the dredging division. Boskalis have been protecting coastlines, reclaiming land and developing infrastructure for over 100 years. That’s a lot of ingenuity, talent and commitment. When we bring all of this together, we become more than the sum of our parts and can seize opportunities others miss. This is how we collaborate and make the difference together. In our lives, in our work and in the lives of people across the world.
