Job summary

Upstaff LTD in Amsterdam is seeking a Strong Junior to Middle Java Backend Developer to contribute to payment processing and financial services applications. You will work with Java, Spring Boot, and microservices in a distributed environment, taking ownership of tasks and ensuring code quality and reliability.

The role covers the full software development lifecycle from implementation to deployment and production support, with a hybrid work model requiring 2 days per week in the Amsterdam

Role Overview

We are looking for a Strong Junior and Middle Java Backend Developer (several positions) to contribute to the development, maintenance and improvement of applications in payment processing and financial services domain.

You will work with Java, Spring Boot, and microservices in a distributed systems environment, taking ownership of development tasks, maintaining code quality, and contributing to system reliability and performance. The role covers the software development lifecycle, from implementation and testing to deployment and production support.

Key Responsibilities

• Backend Development: Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and microservice architecture.
• Code Quality and Testing: Write maintainable production code and automated tests, applying SOLID, DRY, and established software engineering practices.
• Refactoring and Optimization: Improve existing codebases, simplify implementations, and enhance application maintainability and performance.
• System Design: Contribute to technical design decisions, considering business requirements, architecture, infrastructure, and cost implications.
• Production Support: Monitor application health, investigate production issues, perform root cause analysis, and participate in incident reviews.
• Deployment and Reliability: Work with CI/CD processes, support production deployments, track relevant metrics, and maintain operational documentation.
• Continuous Improvement: Identify recurring technical issues, propose improvements, and contribute to system reliability and operational risk reduction.
• Collaboration: Work with engineers and product stakeholders to clarify requirements, communicate technical decisions, and deliver reliable software solutions.

Requirements

• Commercial experience in backend development with Java.
• Good knowledge of Java and experience with Spring Boot.
• Understanding of microservice architecture and distributed systems
• Experience working with SQL and/or NoSQL databases.
• Familiarity with automated testing, code quality practices, and common design patterns.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and version control.
• Knowledge of Docker and cloud or container orchestration technologies.
• Analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively within a development team.
