Job summary

Amber Electric is hiring a mid-level Full Stack Software Engineer to help optimise thousands of batteries and devices in homes across Europe. You’ll work on home automation integrations, mobile/web apps, and a real-time pricing/billing engine while coordinating with product, design, engineering and operations teams.

The role is based in UK/Germany/Netherlands with mostly remote work, flexible hours, and a London office for those based there.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of commercial development experience.
• Commercial experience with the technologies in Amber’s stack is a strong plus.
• Solid frontend and backend capabilities across the stack.

About The Role

Want to help improve the environment by shifting the world’s energy usage towards renewables? We are currently hiring for a mid-level Full Stack Software Engineer. Amber provides a great opportunity to apply your skills as an Engineer to help enable the uptake of renewable energy. Our technology optimises thousands of batteries and other devices in the customers' homes, enabling them to time their usage to consume power at times of high renewable penetration (and cheap prices), and then export power back to the grid at critical times - letting them outbid energy generators and earn potentially >£50 in an afternoon. The Amber Electric Product Team Develops And Supports

• Home automation integrations (to batteries, solar systems, and EVs) that control electricity usage in response to pricing and renewable availability
• Mobile & Web apps for customers to monitor and manage their energy usage
• A pricing and billing engine for real time energy pricing

Qualifications And Skills

At Amber, we want to hire self-starters who are eager to learn, and are comfortable working in a changing environment. Some of the key traits we are looking for in this role:

• You have a positive mindset: equal parts collaborative, curious, and can-do
• Between 3 and 5 years of commercial development experience
• Commercial experience with the specific technologies in our stack is a strong plus
• Commercial experience with Typescript is preferred, though languages sharing similar features (such as JavaScript, C#, Go) are also acceptable
• We favour generalists with strong backend skills, who are open to flexing across the stack (front end, back end, infrastructure)
• Strong verbal and written communication skills built on a foundation of empathy for your fellow humans is essential, with English proficiency of C1/C2 level at a minimum.

Your Responsibilities

• Create and maintain high quality program code across the stack
• Work collaboratively within the product team, taking a high degree of ownership not just of the code you write but of the product that makes it to end users and the processes we employ to get it there
• Contribute your knowledge to the wider Amber org through RFCs, shares and active engagement in shared discussions
• Research, consult, and evaluate our system requirements to identify and discuss appropriate iterations and tradeoffs to meet our goals
• Test, debug, diagnose, and correct errors in our tech stack according to our operational specifications
• Support the apps that are live with our partners, ensuring their customers have a great experience
• Work directly with external partners while collaborating across internal teams, including leadership, product, design, engineering, and customer operations to deliver impactful solutions.

Salary range

Between £45,000 and £70,000 base per annum. All roles at Amber include employee stock options.

The salary for this role is benchmarked to London, UK, with a location-based adjustment reflecting cost, tax and collaboration factors across Europe. You're free to work from any of our preferred locations in Europe – pay simply reflects where you're based.

How You Work

You will be working almost entirely remotely within a high-trust environment where transparency and accountability are foundational to our engineering culture. Amber's flexible approach allows you to shape your schedule around core collaboration hours, which are 7am - 12pm Tuesdays and Thursdays London time. This overlap enables meaningful collaboration with your Australian colleagues.

Outside these core hours, we trust you to manage your time effectively. We expect consistent communication and reliable delivery with a focus on outcomes and impact. Proactive check-ins and sharing progress updates transparently are part of how we maintain this balance of flexibility and responsibility.

We value work-life balance and sustainable pace—we don't want team members to overwork or burn out, nor do we expect you to be available 24/7. Instead, we promote clear boundaries and open dialogue about workload and capacity.

Our headquarters is located in Melbourne, Australia. Our European team operates from a central London hub that you will travel to during your onboarding, and approximately every 2 months thereafter for team collaboration. These in-person sessions help strengthen relationships and reinforce our collaborative culture.

We also have AmberCon every year, this is a big team calendar event and we will fly you to Melbourne to be there with the rest of the team. We will always cover flights, accommodation and other travel costs as part of our travel policies.

The role is a full-time role to be based from the UK/Germany/Netherlands. We have an office space in London for those based there.
