Job description

Help shape the technology behind one of the Netherlands' most trusted brands. As our new Frontend Engineer (React, DevOps), you’ll build and run applications that support our store operations domain. Working at the intersection of engineering, retail execution, and business, you’ll help improve the daily operation of 1,200+ Albert Heijn stores while enabling innovation, reliability, and impact at scale.

Build systems that matter at real scale. In this role, you will design and build applications that support business-critical processes used daily across the organization. Your work directly impacts store execution, system reliability, developer productivity, and the ability of teams to deliver features faster and more safely. You will work on production systems at scale, where performance, resilience, and maintainability are first-class concerns.

This is how you will reinvent food retail.
  • You design, develop, and operate web/mobile frontend applications using modern engineering practices.
  • You work with technologies such as React/NextJS and monorepo architecture.
  • You take ownership of applications end-to-end: from design and implementation to production support and continuous improvement, DevOps.
  • You collaborate closely with product, UX, store operations, and other engineering teams to make pragmatic technical decisions.
How we work
  • Engineers have real ownership and autonomy in technical decisions within our architectural guiderails.
  • With the latest DevAI tooling we supercharge our development workflow, automate where we can, giving you more time to focus on creative problem-solving.
  • Code quality matters: peer reviews, clear architecture, and readable code are part of daily work.
  • Technical debt is acknowledged and addressed.
  • We value simple, robust solutions over unnecessary complexity.
Why this role is interesting for engineers
  • You’ll work on systems with real users and real impact.
  • You'll tackle meaningful engineering challenges, balancing usability, performance, maintainability, and scalability in products that are used every day across our stores and operations.
  • You’ll have time and space to improve both the codebase and the way we work.
  • You’ll grow technically through exposure to complex systems, experienced engineers, and meaningful ownership.
Your new team.

You work at the heart of Albert Heijn's retail operation. We are responsible for supporting the day-to-day processes that enable our stores to run smoothly, efficiently, and consistently for millions of customers every week. Our mission is to empower store colleagues with reliable and intuitive digital products that improve execution, simplify work, and enhance the customer experience.

Together with your full-stack team, you will work on inspiring projects that accelerate our transition into a hybrid Food & Tech company. We use data and technology to future-proof food shopping and make healthy food more accessible to everyone.

At Albert Heijn, you team up with inspiring peers in the retail tech domain: a community of diverse individuals working together for our store operations business.

The recipe for maximum impact.
  • 3+ years of experience with key technologies: React, NextJS, TypeScript, REST API, GitHub Actions, Kubernetes, and Azure Cloud.
  • CI/CD expertise: confident working with continuous integration and deployment, including test automation and release engineering.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals: you apply clean code principles, security best practices, automated testing, and cloud-native development concepts in your daily work.
  • Broader software engineering mindset: while your expertise lies in React, you understand the wider technology landscape, including APIs, backend services, and cloud platforms, and collaborate effectively with engineers across the stack.
  • Experience with iterative development: comfortable working in cycles and adapting as you go.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
  • Business-technical translation: able to turn business needs into technical solutions and work closely with stakeholders.
  • Continuous improvement: you spot opportunities for improvement and help shape the technical roadmap.
  • Embraced DevAI: you understand their capabilities and limitations and have applied these in your daily work.
  • Nice to have: Tailwind, Playwright, Jest/Vitest, SCSS, Figma, and state management libraries.
What we offer.
  • 45 days of paid leave: 25.5 regular vacation days and 19.5 ADV days.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Access to a challenging training curriculum - AH Tech Academy.
  • An excellent pension plan where we as an employer contribute 4.5 times more than you as an employee.
  • A travel allowance or an NS-Business Card for traveling to and from Zaandam by train.
  • Attractive discounts on various insurance policies.
  • 10% staff discount on groceries in all Albert Heijn stores, up to a maximum of €300 per year.
  • A free Mijn Albert Heijn Premium membership with many benefits.
  • A company laptop and telephone.
