Job summary

Aquablu is seeking a Lead Financial Control & Tax to own statutory financial statements under Dutch GAAP, lead the external audit, and build a robust control environment from scratch. You will report to the Finance Manager, manage close, tax obligations, and investor reporting.

This 40-hour on-site role in Amsterdam requires self-direction, AI-enabled process improvements, and leadership of our financial controllers to ensure accuracy and compliance across the organisation.

Qualifications

• Statutory financial statements under Dutch GAAP (RJ) experience.
• Experience guiding a statutory audit.
• Expertise in revenue recognition, leases, provisions and capitalisation.
• Dutch tax knowledge: Vpb, BTW, WBSO.
• Ability to write policy memos defending accounting calls.
• Experience building an internal control environment.
• Self-directed with strong deadlines.
• Fluent English and Dutch capable for tax/audit correspondence.
• Bonus: hardware-as-a-service, subscription or metered-billing exposure; Exact Online.

About the job

As Lead Financial Control & Tax, you're the accounting authority at Aquablu: the integrity of our financial statements, the completeness of our audit file, and every tax obligation the company has.

You report directly into the Finance Manager. You’re end responsible to set the close calendar, build the control environment from scratch, and take Aquablu through its first statutory audit.
How this looks like in practice:

• Audit readiness. Statutory financial statements under Dutch GAAP (RJ), an audit file that's ready year-round rather than at year-end, the external audit led end to end, and documented policies for provisions, leases, revenue recognition and capitalisation.

• Close. Review and sign off journals, reconciliations and period-close output. Own the close calendar and prepare the management accounts package for the CFO.

• Tax. Vpb, BTW and WBSO. Transfer pricing documentation, filing deadlines, and the tax position register including deferred tax.

• Controls and compliance. Design the internal control framework, keep the ERP audit file export clean, and own KVK filings, statutory records and the chart of accounts.

• Investor and lender reporting. Support the CFO on due diligence, investor and covenant reporting. Every number in a board or bank pack reconciles to the ledger.

• Control at scale. Turn manual control work into evidenced checks that surface only exceptions, build AI workflows for close review, billing audit and control testing.

• Team. Manage our financial controllers and set the direction for them. You review their output, set the technical standard they work to, grow their judgment, and act as the escalation point for every technical accounting question in the company.

About you

• Qualified accountant (RA, ACA, ACCA or equivalent), or practice-trained to that level, with hands‑on experience preparing statutory financial statements under Dutch GAAP (RJ)

• You've taken a company through a statutory audit — from the auditor's chair or the company's

• Real technical judgment on revenue recognition, leases, provisions and capitalisation, and you can write the policy memo that defends your call

• Comfortable across Dutch tax: Vpb, BTW, WBSO, and enough transfer pricing to know when to bring in an adviser

• You've built a control environment, not just operated one you inherited

• Self-directed. You set your own calendar, chase your own deadlines, and nobody needs to check your work for you to know it holds up

• Genuinely interested in AI as a tool — you'd rather automate a reconciliation than repeat it

• Fluent in English, and Dutch at a level where you can handle tax authority and auditor correspondence yourself

• Bonus: hardware-as-a-service, subscription or metered-billing experience, and Exact Online

This is a 40-hour on-site role in Amsterdam (Houthavens).
