Job summary

European School The Hague is seeking a Language Support Specialist for English to join the Support Team on a 0.70 FTE basis. The role focuses on English language support with a starting date of 01.11.2026 or as soon as possible, under the CAO VO framework.

The candidate should hold a Bachelor’s in English and CELTA, be fully qualified for secondary education in the country of qualification, and reside in the Netherlands with a valid work permit.

  • Fully qualified teacher status for Secondary Education in the country of qualification.
  • CELTA (or equivalent).

Job description

At ESH Secondary we recognise that all students require different levels and kinds of support, from language acquisition to learning needs, or from emotional support to stress management and behavioural support, to ensure their well‑being. Our dedicated Support Team, made up of highly qualified and experienced Learning Support Specialists, Counsellors and Psychologists continually review, reflect on, and report on the support needs of the students in their care and maintain an open channel for discussion with parents.

Language support specialist for English

  • Working pattern: 0.70 FTE
  • Salary indication:OOP scale 10 minimum€3622 and maximum €5220 for a fulltime contract
  • Start date: 01.11.2026 or As soon as possible

Requirements
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree (Hons) in English Language / English Literature
  • You hold a fully qualified teacher status for Secondary Education in the country where the qualification is obtained(e.g.PGCE and QTS with induction)
  • CELTA (or equivalent)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (native English speaker or qualified at CEFR C2 level)
  • Living in the Netherlands with a working permit
Recommendations
  • Possess a specialist qualification in Learning Support or Specific Learning Difficulties (e.g., dyslexia), or demonstrate significant experience and expertise in supporting students with diverse learning needs
  • Ability to plan and deliver individual, small-group and in-class support
  • Recent experience of teaching the Cambridge suite of exams/IGCSE English/GCSE English/European Baccalaureate English/International Baccalaureate English
  • Experience and knowledge of teaching EAL in a secondary school
  • Understanding of the difference between language acquisition needs and additional learning needs, which may require further assessment or referral
  • Successful experience of managing an effective classroom environment to support pupil learning and positive behaviour
  • Experience of working in an international setting
  • Experience and strategies in how to help students access the language of the curriculum across a range of subjects, not only English lessons
  • Ability to promote a positive ethos and pride in the school together with high standards of education, care and behaviour
  • Evidence of the ability to collaborate with subject teachers, mentors, learning support colleagues, families and external support professionals
  • Knowledge of school systems for tracking and assessment

  • We offer a salary aligned with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement (CAO VO). The salary is a minimum of €3622 and a maximum of €5520 for a full-time contract on scale 10 OOP and the step offered will depend on your level of experience.
