Job Title

Internship: AI & Automation (non-thesis)

Job Description

Start Date: as soon as possible

Duration: 6 months

Type: Internship (non-thesis)

Weekly Presence: 40h (minimum 32h)

Location: Best (3x per week)

At Philips, we design meaningful innovations. Within the Information Security Process and Tooling team in Group Security, we are exploring practical uses of AI and automation that can make security assessments faster, more consistent and easier to interpret.

During this internship, you will help identify, prototype and evaluate high-value use cases. You will work with security specialists, engineers, researchers and other stakeholders to understand assessment workflows and available data, turn promising ideas into proof‑of‑concept solutions, and determine whether the results are reliable, explainable and useful in a real security context.

Your Role
  • Identify and prioritize opportunities to improve the Philips security control framework and security‑assessment processes through AI and automation.
  • Map assessment workflows, stakeholder needs, relevant data sources and practical constraints.
  • Prepare, structure and analyze real‑world security and control data.
  • Develop proof‑of‑concept AI‑assisted or automated assessment workflows and, where feasible, support their progression toward a pilot.
  • Define evaluation measures covering quality, reliability, false positives, false negatives, explainability and user trust.
  • Apply appropriate privacy, information‑security, traceability and human‑review requirements throughout the work.
  • Test prototypes with stakeholders, incorporate feedback and communicate findings through clear analyses, visualizations and decision‑ready recommendations.
  • Document the approach, limitations and recommended next steps so the work can be understood and continued by the team.
By the end of the internship, you should have delivered:
  • A clearly defined security‑assessment use case and its data requirements.
  • A working proof of concept for one or more AI‑assisted or automated workflows.
  • An evidence‑based evaluation of benefits, risks and limitations.
  • Practical documentation and recommendations for a future pilot or implementation stage.
You're The Right Fit If
  • You are currently pursuing a Bachelor or Master degree in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Cybersecurity or a related discipline.
  • You have experience with data analysis and rapid prototyping through coursework, projects or previous work.
  • You are comfortable working with incomplete or imperfect real‑world data.
  • You can explain technical findings clearly to non‑technical stakeholders.
  • You are curious, proactive and interested in learning about information security.
  • Experience with real life application of AI and AI supported automation in cybersecurity is an advantage, but it is not required.
  • This internship will suit someone who enjoys working end‑to‑end: from understanding data and stakeholder needs to testing a practical solution and communicating what should happen next.
How We Work Together

We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office‑based teams, this means working in‑person at least 3 days per week. Onsite roles require full‑time presence in the company's facilities. Field roles are most effectively done outside of the company's main facilities, generally at the customers’ or suppliers’ locations.

Monthly full‑time allowance between €500 - €700 gross, depending on your education level. If you need to relocate to The Netherlands specifically for the internship there will be a different allowance. Part‑time internships receive the allowance pro‑rata.

Housing compensation, in case of relocating to the vicinity of the office, €300,- net if location is in the vicinity of Amsterdam, €255,- net for all other Philips locations. To be eligible, your usual home‑work travel distance needs to be more than 50 km or 1.5 hours of travel time (one way). Afterwards, you need to provide the rental contract from your (new) landlord.

Travel compensation, if you are not eligible for a free public transport (OV chipkaart - student travel product); you can receive max. €192,- net depending on your location. Paid holidays per internship term.
