The rapid rise of AI agents is reshaping how work is managed and distributed in organizations including ING. Historically, software engineering has followed a relatively stable division of labor: business analysts, product owners, and other business roles occupy the problem space, translating organizational needs into requirements; software engineers occupy the solution space, implementing those requirements in code. This boundary has been blurry, but it was reinforced at the organizational level, for instance, through job titles and team structures.
Agentic AI has pushed these boundaries. On the one hand, we observe a shift-left approach where technical teams deploy agentic AI to absorb tasks traditionally performed by business roles and domain experts, pulling business logic responsibilities into the engineering tasks. On the other hand, we also notice a shift-right approach: business roles use natural language interfaces and AI agents to generate or modify code directly, bypassing engineering gatekeeping. The traditional separation between functional "problem" roles and technical "solution" roles is dissolving. This comes at a cost: while AI executes the work with potential productivity gains, code is generated faster than it can be comprehended increasing cognitive debt.
The main challenge brought by this shifting environment is the governance gap created when role boundaries dissolve faster than oversight structures can adapt. When software engineers craft their jobs to absorb business responsibilities without the requisite domain knowledge, or when business roles generate code without engineering rigor, the human-in-the-loop may be present but not competent for the decisions being made. To first diagnose the magnitude of the problem, we address the following overarching question: How do software engineers and business-side professionals engage in job crafting in response to agentic AI?
This assignment is withing the modelling technology area (CTO F&R Risk Modelling) in the FitLab team where models are implemented based on specifications from the Credit Risk organization (CRO) with business analysis and functional guidance from COO Risk. Together with COO Risk the modelling technology organization for the Modelling Tribe. As an intern you define the precise scope of the assignment with the IT Area Lead of the modelling area and during the assignment you will report on a regular basis on the (interim) results of the assignment.
