Job description

Take your next career step at ABB E-Mobility and drive the future of our EV Charging software.

We're looking for a Firmware Engineering Lead for the Netherlands, with deep firmware expertise and a track record of delivering complex hardware/software products. You'll challenge unnecessary complexity, champion smarter architectures, and navigate tough engineering trade-offs — driving your team to ship robust, maintainable, high-quality software on demanding timelines, while helping build the charging technology that will power tomorrow's mobility.

You’ll shape the software backbone of next-generation EV charging infrastructure — leading an embedded firmware team across the full product lifecycle, from architecture and requirements through implementation, integration, verification, release, and field support

What Will You Do
  • Lead & Develop the Team – Lead, develop, and coach the local firmware engineering team in the Netherlands, setting a high bar for technical quality, ownership, and delivery.
  • Own the Full Firmware Lifecycle – Own firmware execution end-to-end, from requirements and architecture through implementation, integration, verification, release, and field support.
  • Drive Technical Excellence – Provide hands‑on technical leadership by reviewing designs, challenging assumptions, reducing unnecessary complexity, and proposing smarter architectural solutions.
  • Make Decisive Technical Calls – Drive timely decisions when teams are blocked, requirements are unclear, or architecture and implementation trade‑offs need to be resolved.
  • Collaborate Cross‑Functionally – Work closely with system architecture, hardware engineering, test automation, product management, manufacturing, and field support to deliver reliable firmware for complex HW/SW products.
  • Define Scope & Delivery Priorities – Define firmware scope, estimates, plans, and delivery priorities for new product development and improvement initiatives.
  • Enable Maintainable Software – Ensure firmware development practices, documentation, support material, and knowledge sharing enable maintainable software and effective execution.

To succeed in this role, we’re looking for a a decisive technical leader with:

  • Pragmatic and independent leadership style, with the ability to separate signal from noise, keep teams focused on technical outcomes, challenge assumptions, resolve trade‑offs, and ensure engineering processes support effective delivery.
  • 10+ years of experience in embedded firmware or software engineering for complex industrial products, including significant experience leading technical teams.
  • Proven track record of delivering production-quality firmware for complex HW/SW products, preferably in power electronics, industrial automation, energy systems, automotive, or comparable embedded domains.
  • Hands‑on experience with embedded firmware development, software architecture, debugging, integration, and verification in resource‑constrained or real‑time systems.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering or related technical fields.
  • Ability to challenge technical assumptions, reduce unnecessary complexity, and make clear decisions when requirements, architecture, or implementation choices are unclear.
  • Strong understanding of embedded software development practices, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, configuration management, and release readiness for hardware-software products.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to align stakeholders, coach engineers, and create clarity in technically complex situations.
