Job summary

OpenFX seeks a Legal Counsel to act as a strategic partner and advisor across the business, focusing on licensing (MiCAR/PSD2), product development, and financial partnerships. You will shape regulatory strategy for cross-border payments, crypto, and technology while enabling fast growth and managing risk.

The role requires translating complex legal requirements into actionable guidance and partnering with product, engineering, compliance, and business teams in a high-growth startup.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of legal experience (in-house or private practice).
• Traineeship at a top-tier law firm.
• Experience advising fintechs or financial institutions.
• Strong knowledge of financial services regulations and payments regulations (MiCAR, PSD2, EMD, Dutch AML acts).
• Ability to balance risk with commercial objectives and deliver practical advice.
• Experience collaborating with product, engineering, compliance, and business teams.
• Excellent communication and analytical skills.
• Self-starter in fast-paced environments.

Responsibilities

• Advise product and engineering on regulatory aspects of design, development, and launch for payments products.
• Develop licensing and market-entry strategies across the EU and UK and manage license applications.
• Provide practical regulatory guidance on evolving payments, crypto, FX across global markets.
• Identify regulatory risks and craft mitigation strategies aligned with business objectives.
• Support corporate governance, privacy, IP, fundraising and general legal needs as the company grows.
• Partner with leadership and manage external counsel efficiently.
• Build scalable legal processes to support rapid growth.
