Job summary

Uptime isn't a metric here. It's someone getting care.

Our backend keeps running whether or not anyone is watching it — and someone has to be the reason for that. You'll be the person who sees a problem while it's still a signal on a graph, not a phone call from a colleague.

We're hiring for this now with certification firmly in view. Our infrastructure needs real changes to get there, and we'd rather make them with someone who's done this before than work through them on uncertainty and guesswork.

What you'll do

• Run, monitor and maintain all backend services, and keep continuous uptime a given rather than a goal.
  
• Extend our monitoring and build out active alerting — the aim is detecting and signalling issues before they become problems.
  
• Troubleshoot operational problems when they do land, and remove the cause rather than the symptom.
  
• Maintain and extend the Terraform codebase that manages our entire infrastructure.
  
• Support the build server and work alongside the software engineers on setting up and maintaining their CI/CD builds.
  
• Identify scalability limits before we hit them, and integrate new cloud services as we grow into them.
  

Requirements

What you bring

• Linux — Debian, Red Hat and Busybox-based distributions.
  
• Docker, and infrastructure as code with Terraform.
  
• MySQL, Kong API gateway, and Concourse for CI/CD.
  
• Fluency with the twelve-factor app methodology, and the instinct to apply it rather than cite it.
  
• Medior to senior experience — you've carried production before and know how it behaves at three in the morning.
  
• Comfort working towards certification requirements, where "it works" and "it's demonstrably correct" are different bars.
  
• The instinct to automate the thing you've now done three times by hand.
  
• Judgement about when to build carefully and when to ship and iterate.
  
• Affinity with healthcare data and AVG/GDPR, or the seriousness to learn it quickly.
