What are you going to do?

Your core tasks in this position are to teach and develop education in the field of international and transnational criminal law, to conduct research and to fulfil administrative tasks. We are particularly looking for someone with expertise in European criminal law and/or transnational criminal law.

As assistant professor, you will have a key role in the LLM master program in International and Transnational Criminal Law. You will be tasked with coordinating courses in our program as well as delivering lectures and seminars. Moreover, you will supervise LLM theses within the realm of international and transnational criminal law. In the future, you may also be asked to teach criminal law courses in Dutch. Beyond teaching responsibilities, you will fulfil administrative and organizational tasks in the section and, in the future, also the faculty. Furthermore, you'll conduct and publish high-quality research in the field of international and transnational criminal law, contributing valuable insights to the academic community. Looking ahead, you'll play a vital role in mentoring and supporting young researchers and PhD candidates, ensuring their growth and success in the field. What do we require?

For this position of assistant professor, we are looking for an international/transnational criminal lawyer with, preferably, several years of relevant experience and who fits the following profile:

  • You have a PhD in the field of international, European or transnational criminal law -or adjacent fields of law;
  • You are a creative and innovative researcher in the field of international and/or transnational criminal law, and you have the potential to successfully apply for external funding;
  • You have the potential to publish in international (peer reviewed) journals;
  • You gave demonstrable teaching skills, as evidenced by positive teaching evaluations;
  • You have demonstrable experience in developing and delivering innovative activating university education;
  • If you have broad didactic knowledge and skills and experience with an educational organization, this is an asset;
  • You have the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or you are willing to obtain this qualification;
  • You have strong organizational skills and you are a team player;
  • You are proactive, flexible and results-oriented;
  • You can express yourself both written and verbally fluently in English;
  • If you can express yourself both written and verbally fluently in Dutch, this is an asset;
  • For non-Dutch speaking candidates, you demonstrate commitment to learning Dutch.
What We Offer

We offer you a position as an assistant professor (UD-2) within the Criminal Law Section at the UvA. A varied and challenging job in an ambitious organisation. The candidate will be offered an assistant professor position for the duration of 18 months, with a view to permanent employment.

The salary amounts to a minimum of € 4,492 and a maximum of € 6,148 gross per month (salary scale 11,CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten) based on full-time employment (38 hours). The UvA also offers extensive secondary employment benefits, including 8% vacation pay and 8.3% year-end bonus. The CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten applies.

The Criminal Law Section is part of the Public Law Department and provides education and research in the field of national and international criminal law. The research profile of the members of the section is national, international, comparative and interdisciplinary in nature. Members of the section teach in the bachelor's program Dutch Law, in the master's program Public Law, track Criminal Law, in the master's program International and Transnational Criminal Law, and in criminal law courses in the English language bachelor programs of Amsterdam University College (AUC) and Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE). The research of the members of the criminal law section is part of the Amsterdam Center for Criminal Justice (ACCJ) and in case of ICL research also of the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL).
