Job summary

Position: Technical Manager – Renewable Energy (Solar & BESS)

Department: Technical / Engineering

Reporting To: CEO

1. Job Overview

The Technical Manager is responsible for overseeing the technical design, engineering, project implementation, testing, commissioning and operation of renewable energy projects, particularly Commercial & Industrial (C&I) solar PV systems, utility-scale solar farms and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

The successful candidate will lead the technical team, ensure compliance with applicable technical standards and regulatory requirements, and provide technical support throughout the project lifecycle, from feasibility assessment and system design to installation, commissioning and operation.

The candidate should possess strong technical expertise in electrical engineering, renewable energy technologies and project execution, with the ability to coordinate effectively with clients, consultants, contractors, suppliers and relevant authorities.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Technical Design & Engineering

• Lead and oversee the technical design and engineering of C&I solar PV systems, utility-scale solar farms and BESS projects.
• Review and validate electrical system designs, including single-line diagrams (SLD), electrical layouts, cable sizing, protection coordination, earthing and lightning protection systems.
• Oversee PV system sizing, energy yield assessments, performance simulations and technical feasibility studies.
• Review BESS system configurations, battery capacity sizing, inverter/PCS selection, energy management systems (EMS) and system integration requirements.
• Ensure all engineering designs comply with applicable Malaysian regulations, technical standards and relevant international standards.
• Evaluate technical proposals, equipment specifications and engineering submissions from suppliers, consultants and contractors.

B. Project Technical Management

• Manage and coordinate technical activities throughout the project lifecycle, from feasibility study and design development to installation, testing, commissioning and handover.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to project engineers, site engineers and technical personnel.
• Monitor project progress and ensure technical deliverables are completed within the agreed project schedule and budget.
• Coordinate with EPC contractors, system integrators, consultants, suppliers and clients to resolve technical issues.
• Conduct site inspections, technical assessments and engineering reviews to ensure project implementation meets approved designs and specifications.
• Identify technical risks and develop appropriate mitigation measures to minimise project delays and cost overruns.
• Oversee the integration of solar PV systems with battery storage systems, grid connections and other electrical infrastructure.
• Review and evaluate BESS technologies, battery management systems (BMS), power conversion systems (PCS), EMS and SCADA systems.
• Ensure proper system integration, communication interoperability, protection coordination and operational performance.
• Assess BESS safety requirements, including thermal management, fire protection, emergency response systems and electrical protection.
• Coordinate with manufacturers and system integrators on technical specifications, troubleshooting and performance optimisation.

D. Testing, Commissioning & Quality Assurance

• Oversee testing, commissioning and performance verification of solar PV and BESS installations.
• Review commissioning procedures, test reports, technical documentation and handover requirements.
• Ensure compliance with applicable quality, safety and technical standards.
• Investigate technical failures, equipment defects and system performance issues.

E. Team Leadership & Technical Development

• Lead, mentor and develop the technical and engineering team.
• Establish technical standards, engineering procedures and best practices.
• Conduct technical reviews and provide guidance on engineering solutions and project implementation.
• Evaluate new technologies, equipment and engineering methodologies to improve project efficiency and performance.
• Support the technical team together with Business Development team in preparing technical proposals, tender submissions and client presentations.

3. Job Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent recognised qualification.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant working experience in the renewable energy industry, particularly in solar PV and/or BESS projects.
• Strong technical knowledge and practical experience in:
• Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
• Electrical system design, grid interconnection and power system protection.
• Experience in managing or supervising engineering activities, project implementation and technical teams.
• Familiarity with Malaysian electrical regulations, grid connection requirements and relevant international standards.
• Proficiency in engineering software such as AutoCAD, PVsyst and other relevant electrical design or simulation tools.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent project management, communication and coordination skills.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects and meet tight project deadlines.
• Excellent reporting and communication skills, especially in Bahasa Malaysia and English, both spoken and written. Ability to communicate in Mandarin will be an additional advantage.
• Certified GCPV designer will be an added advantage.
• Willingness to travel to project sites when required.
