GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Responsible for rendering professional nursing care to patients within an assigned unit of the hospital. This nursing care is an integral part of the individualized holistic patient care plan as directed by the medical staff according to the Policies and Procedures of the hospital and in keeping with the generally accepted principles, policies and procedures of the Nursing Services.
JOB DESCRIPTION ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT
- Understands and carries out nursing care in line with the Vision and Mission Statements, Goals and Objectives that suit the scope of the Nursing Services.
- Works shift duties or as assigned by the Unit Manager according to the unit’s operational hours.
- Informs the Unit Manager when a change occurs in circumstances that affect standards of care.
- Receives and handover reports of patients, knows the case in detail, ensures all doctors’ orders are carried out before shift change and on taking over the case, and reports any incidents or problems encountered.
- Visits every patient in the unit together with the team members on taking over duties to assess the condition, compare with the report, re‑plan nursing care, determine priorities, and plan patient care according to needs and staff availability.
- Provides individualized holistic care using the Nursing Process approach with proper contemporaneous documentation in patients’ files.
- Reports all abnormal findings and progress of patients to the relevant doctors and consultants.
- Conducts regular nursing rounds on all patients in the ward to identify additional needs and provides emotional support through conversations with patients and family members.
- Follows doctors’ ward rounds and assists them in procedures when required.
- Carries out orders of doctors and consultants pertaining to patient care and delegates to other team members according to their assignments.
- Liaises and discusses with the relevant doctors and consultants regarding care of patients in the unit and ward.
- Establishes and develops effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives to achieve optimal patient satisfaction.
- Attends and participates in unit meetings, dialogue sessions and hospital activities.
- Participates in health education of patients and their families in the ward.
- Assists the Unit Manager in administering the unit and wards when assigned as shift nurse in charge.
- Acts on behalf of the Unit Manager in setting standards and expectations in the quality of care.
- Carries out duties and responsibilities of the Unit Manager in her absence as directed.
- Ensures charges of equipment and consumable items are recorded into patients’ charges accordingly and checks for completeness.
- Responsible for checking and documenting the supply of sterile packs from CSSS and for weekly checking of packaging integrity.
- Maintains and documents an adequate supply of unit stock.
- Carries out assignments scheduled by the Unit Manager and provides feedback.
JOB REQUIREMENT
Education: Registered with the Nursing Board of Malaysia with a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
Skills & Competencies: Possess certifications in BLS, ACLS, and ATLS. Proficient in writing and speaking in English and Bahasa Malaysia. Microsoft Office literacy.
