Job summary

SWIFT in Kuala Lumpur is seeking a motivated Intern Software/Systems Engineer to join the Sanctions Testing (STS) team for a 6-month internship. You will gain hands-on experience in software development, DevOps practices, cloud technologies, and Agile delivery while contributing to a business-critical application used by financial institutions worldwide.

You will work within a cross-functional Scrum team, learn Java development under senior engineers, and participate in Agile ceremonies, CI/CD

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Basic knowledge of Java programming and object‑oriented concepts.
• Understanding of data structures and algorithms.

Responsibilities

• Work as part of a cross-functional Scrum team with developers, testers, PMs and tech leads.
• Assist in development, testing, maintenance and enhancement of STS components.
• Learn Java-based application development under guidance of senior engineers.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies (sprint planning, stand-ups, reviews, retrospectives).
• Support implementation of features and bug fixes from user stories and requirements.
• Assist in writing and maintaining automated tests to improve quality.

This 6-month internship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in software development, DevOps practices, cloud technologies, and Agile delivery while contributing to a business-critical application used by financial institutions worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Work as part of a cross-functional Scrum team alongside experienced developers, testers, product managers, and technical leads.
• Assist in the development, testing, maintenance, and enhancement of software components within the STS product.
• Learn and contribute to Java-based application development under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies such as sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.
• Support the implementation of software features and bug fixes based on user stories and technical requirements.
• Assist in writing and maintaining automated tests to improve software quality and reliability.
• Learn software engineering best practices, including code reviews, version control, testing, and documentation.
• Gain exposure to CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, and DevOps tooling.
• Support troubleshooting and analysis of issues in development and test environments.
• Collaborate with team members across Malaysia and Europe in a multicultural environment.
• Participate in technical discussions, knowledge-sharing sessions, and design walkthroughs.
• Contribute ideas for process improvements and continuously develop your technical skills throughout the internship.

Nice to Have

• Exposure to Java frameworks such as Spring Boot.
• Familiarity with automated testing frameworks such as JUnit.
• Basic knowledge of web technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, or REST APIs.
• Exposure to Linux/Unix environments and command-line tools.
• Basic understanding of cloud computing concepts, containers (Docker), or CI/CD practices.
• Experience with university projects involving software development.
• Interest in automation, scripting, or DevOps practices.
• Interest in financial technology and payment systems.

Education

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Basic knowledge of Java programming and object-oriented programming concepts.
• Understanding of software development fundamentals, including data structures and algorithms.
• Familiarity with version control systems such as Git.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Eagerness to learn new technologies and work in a collaborative environment.
• Fluent in English (spoken and written).

Experience

• No prior professional experience required.
• Relevant academic projects, coursework, personal projects, hackathons, or open‑source contributions will be considered an advantage.
