Job summary

Standard Chartered is seeking a technically strong and solutions-oriented Backend engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of scalable, high-performance Java/Spring Boot micro service applications.

You will mentor teams on Agile delivery, secure coding, observability, and engineering excellence, while collaborating across product and architecture to deliver modular, extensible backend platforms.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related discipline.
• Minimum 8 years of hands-on backend engineering experience.
• Strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, microservices, REST APIs, SQL, relational databases, messaging, caching, and backend integration patterns.
• Proven track record in building scalable, secure, resilient, and high-performance backend services and distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience with API design, service-to-service integration, event-driven architecture, batch processing, database optimisation, and observability practices.
• Good understanding of SDLC, Agile delivery, CI/CD, testing strategy, unit testing, end-to-end testing, and release support.

Responsibilities

• Establish backend design principles, coding standards, API standards, and architectural patterns in line with the company's long-term technology vision.
• Architect scalable, secure, and performance-first backend services from inception and lead adoption of modern backend practices.
• Mentor teams to ensure maintainability, resilience, and alignment with business objectives.
• Lead cross-team architecture decisions across backend, frontend, data, integration, and infrastructure layers.
• Oversee requirement analysis and translate complex needs into actionable user stories and development plans.
• Champion SDLC processes and Agile practices and drive releases across squads.
