Job summary

Carousell Group is seeking an experienced software engineering leader in Malaysia to drive technical design and the development of scalable, production‑grade applications. You will steer architecture decisions, mentor engineers, and champion AI‑first practices and agentic workflows across teams.

The role requires strong fundamentals in modern programming, API design, and cloud‑based systems, with a focus on delivering reliable software at scale in a fast‑paced, product‑driven environment.

Qualifications

Job Description

Reponsibilities:

Technical Leadership & System Design

Lead the technical design and implementation of scalable, maintainable, and reliable software systems.

Apply strong software design principles, design patterns, SOLID principles, and clean architecture to engineering solutions.

Make sound technical decisions and provide clear direction to engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.

Review architecture, technical designs, and code to ensure quality, scalability, security, and maintainability.

Identify technical debt and drive initiatives to improve system reliability, performance, and developer productivity.

AI & Agentic Ways of Working

Champion AI-first software development practices across the engineering team.

Understand and apply agentic workflows, including the use of AI agents for coding, testing, debugging, documentation, code reviews, and engineering automation.

Experiment with and introduce new AI tools, agents, and workflows that improve engineering productivity and quality.

Guide engineers in effectively working with AI rather than simply using AI as a coding assistant.

Help establish best practices around prompting, context engineering, agent orchestration, validation, and human-in-the-loop workflows.

Contribute to building reusable AI skills, agents, and engineering workflows for the wider organisation.

Establish and promote engineering best practices across development, testing, deployment, observability, and production operations.

Conduct code and design reviews and ensure adherence to agreed engineering standards.

Encourage CI/CD, observability, security, and operational excellence.

Drive continuous improvements in development processes and engineering productivity.

Mentor engineers and help them grow their technical capabilities.

Coach team members on software design, coding standards, system thinking, and engineering best practices.

Create a culture of knowledge sharing, ownership, experimentation, and continuous learning.

Provide technical guidance while enabling engineers to make independent decisions.

Help raise the overall engineering maturity and quality bar of the team.

Data & Database

Database and data engineering experience is an added advantage.

Work effectively with relational and/or NoSQL databases and understand fundamental database concepts.

Understand data modelling, indexing, query optimisation, transactions, and database performance.

Collaborate with Data and Analytics teams where product and engineering solutions require strong data foundations.

Qualifications

5 years of professional software engineering experience, with experience taking technical ownership of systems or products.

Strong understanding of software design principles, SOLID principles, design patterns, and clean architecture.

Strong programming fundamentals and experience with at least one modern programming language.

Experience designing and building scalable, distributed, and production‑grade applications.

Strong understanding of API design, system integration, testing, CI/CD, and cloud‑based systems.

Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and influence engineering practices across a team.

Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.

Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, product‑driven environment.

Strong interest in Generative AI, AI agents, agentic workflows, and AI‑first engineering practices.

Experience using AI coding assistants and/or AI agents as part of day‑to‑day software development.

Good understanding of databases and data modelling is an advantage.
