Job summary

The International School of Kuala Lumpur is seeking a MS Humanities teacher to blend history, English and current events with core literacy. You will plan lessons, assess student work, and support diverse learners across grades 6–8 in a globally-minded, inclusive setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in education is preferred.
• Teaching certification is desirable.
• Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in middle school.

Responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

The MS Humanities teacher will be part of the humanities team blending the concepts of history, English and current events with core literacy schools. The team aims to develop a passion for reading and writing through activities that challenge and inspire students to explore across genres. Teachers are encouraged to immerse students in collaborative learning experiences, critical thinking skills and evidence based explanations. Together, the team works to plan lessons and units, to select appropriate pedagogical strategies and assessments to meet the standards being taught, and finally to make decisions on how to support students who have not met the learning outcomes or those that have easily surpassed them.

The expectations for all humanities teachers is that they will collaborate to ensure common assessments are created prior to the start of every unit, formative assessments are given regularly, and that moderation occurs at the end of summative assessments. Humanities teachers are to ensure all students are having a similar learning experience in order to meet the standards in the common assessment. RESPONSIBILITIES inclusive but not limited to:

• Develop and implement lesson plans that align with the school’s curriculum.

• Assess students' performance through assignments, projects, tests, and quizzes, and providing feedback to help them improve

• Foster a multicultural and international perspective that creates a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes cross-cultural communication and collaboration among students from diverse cultural backgrounds

• Collaborate with other humanities teachers to ensure continuity across the curriculum and develop interdisciplinary connections. The humanities teacher will also participate in faculty meetings, professional development programs, and other school activities to enhance their teaching skills and stay up-to-date with the latest teaching practices and trends

• Communicate with parents and school administrators regarding student progress and academic issues

• Perform other duties as assigned by the department or school administration

Technical skills

• Passion for reading, especially young adult literature

• Proficient and have a deep understanding of the English language and literature, including knowledge of literary devices, genres, and historical and cultural contexts with the ability to analyze and interpret literary texts from different cultures and time periods, and help students develop their critical thinking and writing skills

• Proficient in using technology tools and resources to support teaching and learning, such as learning management systems, digital content, and online collaboration tools and be able to integrate technology into your teaching to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes

• Assess and evaluate student performance using a variety of assessment methods, including formative and summative assessments. Should be able to provide feedback that is timely, accurate, and constructive to help students improve, and utilize reporting mechanisms to share this feedback with families as needed

• Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds. The teacher should be sensitive to cultural differences and able to adapt the teaching style to meet the needs of a multicultural classroom

• Must be able to analyze and interpret student data to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses, and develop strategies to improve student performance.

• Oversee the planning and implementation of school-wide initiatives including, but not limited to, portfolio reflections, student team-building activities, preparations for student-led conferences, field trips, symposiums and team events.

Curriculum Leadership

• Conduct a minimum of 1 meeting per 8 day cycle with the team in order to discuss, plan, implement and review grade level initiatives, cross curricular units, and other curricular related priorities.

• Ensure that the analysis of data is used for decision making.

• Ensure follow-up related to students’ needs that are identified through questions 3 & 4 from the Learning Teams Protocol (LTP)

• Supporting any additional duties related to MS Curriculum.

Qualifications and experience preferred

• Bachelor’s Degree (in education preferred)

• Relevant teaching certification
• Minimum of recognised 3 years teaching experience
• Experience working with middle school students grades 6-8

Note on Scope of Position:

In addition to teaching health, all members of our Middle School faculty serve as advisors and homegroup leaders during the school day. All faculty members also participate in Malaysia Week, a week-long opportunity for students to leave the classroom and explore our beautiful host nation. Additionally, faculty are asked to lead at least one after school activity or sport each year.
