The Medical Assistant is responsible for supporting the doctor in providing safe, efficient, and patient-focused care at the GP clinic. The role includes patient assessment, assisting during consultations and procedures, performing basic clinical procedures, preparing medications and equipment as authorized, maintaining clinical records, and supporting the smooth daily operation of the clinic.
Key Responsibilities
- Register and receive patients in a professional and courteous manner.
- Obtain and record patients' medical history and presenting complaints.
- Measure and record vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation, height, and weight.
- Perform basic patient assessment and promptly report abnormal findings to the doctor.
- Assist patients before, during, and after consultation.
- Provide appropriate patient education and instructions as directed by the doctor.
Clinical Support
- Assist the doctor during consultations, examinations, and minor procedures.
- Prepare treatment rooms, instruments, equipment, and supplies before procedures.
- Perform basic clinical procedures within the scope of training, competency, and authorization.
- Carry out ECG, blood glucose testing, urine testing, and other basic investigations as required.
- Assist with wound cleaning, dressing, suturing preparation, and other minor procedures.
- Administer injections or medications only when appropriately authorized and according to clinic protocols.
- Monitor patients following procedures and report any adverse reactions or changes in condition to the doctor.
- Assist with emergency management and provide Basic Life Support (BLS) when required and within the scope of training.
Medication and Supplies
- Assist with preparation, handling, storage, and dispensing of medications according to clinic procedures and applicable requirements.
- Check medication expiry dates, stock levels, and storage conditions.
- Maintain accurate medication and medical-supply records.
- Ensure clinical equipment and emergency equipment are clean, functional, and readily available.
- Report damaged, expired, or insufficient supplies to the appropriate person.
Infection Prevention and Control
- Follow proper hand hygiene and infection-control practices.
- Clean and disinfect clinical equipment and treatment areas according to clinic protocols.
- Handle sharps and clinical waste safely and appropriately.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and hygienic clinical environment.
- Follow occupational health and safety procedures.
Documentation and Administrative Duties
- Maintain accurate and timely patient and clinical records.
- Record vital signs, procedures, treatments, investigations, and other relevant information.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with clinic privacy policies.
- Assist with appointment scheduling, patient flow, registration, and other administrative duties when required.
- Assist with inventory management and ordering of medical and clinic supplies.
- Ensure clinical areas are properly prepared at the beginning and end of each working shift.
Emergency Duties
- Recognize signs of medical emergencies and immediately alert the doctor.
- Assist the doctor in emergency assessment and treatment.
- Prepare emergency equipment, medications, and supplies when required.
- Assist with arranging ambulance or hospital referral/transfer when necessary.
Qualifications
- Diploma in Medical Assistant / Assistant Medical Officer or equivalent qualification recognized by the relevant Malaysian authority.
- Registered with the Medical Assistant Board, Malaysia, where applicable.
- Possess a valid Annual Practising Certificate (APC), where applicable.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is preferred.
- Additional relevant clinical certifications are an advantage.
Experience
- Previous experience in a GP clinic, outpatient clinic, hospital, or primary-care setting is preferred.
- Experience in minor procedures, venepuncture, ECG, wound care, and emergency assistance is an advantage.
- Fresh graduates may be considered subject to the clinic's requirements.
