Job summary

Arup Malaysia is seeking a skilled lighting designer to develop lighting concepts and technical documentation across concept to construction. You will collaborate with architects, interior and landscape teams, and engineers to deliver defined lighting packages while ensuring quality and energy efficiency.

The role requires strong communication, a robust portfolio, and proficiency with DIALux evo, Revit/BIM, AutoCAD and related tools. A collaborative, regional design culture awaits.

Qualifications

• Qualifications in lighting design, architecture, interior or related discipline with a strong portfolio.
• Solid understanding of architectural lighting principles and energy efficiency.
• Proficiency with DIALux evo, Revit/BIM and AutoCAD; additional tools are advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Develop lighting concepts, design narratives, calculations, specifications and docs across stages.
• Deliver defined lighting packages while coordinating with architects, interior, landscape, engineers and sustainability teams.
• Prepare lighting simulations and assessments using DIALux evo, AGi32, Radiance or equivalents.
• Support coordination, presentations, site reviews, mock-ups and client engagements.
• Assist with bids, capability statements and knowledge sharing to grow SEA projects.

You will work on a diverse portfolio of architectural lighting projects including hospitality, mixed-use, commercial, civic, education, landscape, facade and night-time experience developments. This role suits a self-managed designer with strong visual and technical capability, confident communication skills and a passion for creating meaningful human experiences through light.

The Opportunity

• Develop lighting concepts, design narratives, calculations, specifications and technical documentation across all project stages, from concept through construction support.
• Deliver defined packages of lighting work while coordinating closely with architects, interior designers, landscape architects, engineers and sustainability specialists.
• Prepare lighting simulations and technical assessments using tools such as DIALux evo, AGi32, Radiance or equivalent, ensuring quality, visual comfort and maintainability.
• Support project coordination, presentations, site reviews, mock-ups and client engagements while contributing to a collaborative regional design culture.
• Assist with practice development activities including bids, capability statements, knowledge sharing and the advancement of specialist lighting expertise across SEA projects.

Is this role right for you?

• Relevant qualifications and experience in lighting design, architecture, interior design, industrial/product design or a related discipline, with a strong portfolio demonstrating design and technical capability.
• Solid understanding of architectural lighting principles including ambience, glare control, visual comfort, materiality, energy efficiency and maintainability.
• Proficiency in DIALux evo, Revit/BIM and AutoCAD, with additional experience in AGi32, Radiance, Rhino, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite or visualisation tools considered advantageous.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the confidence to present ideas clearly and work effectively within multidisciplinary and regional teams.
• A proactive, organised and commercially aware mindset, with the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining high-quality project delivery under pressure.
